Shawnee County Solid Waste
The Shawnee County Solid Waste department hauls more than 150 tons of refuse and 40 tons of recyclables per day!
Shawnee County recycling guidelines
A week in review.
Letβs review this weekβs educational offerings.
Never make a Facebook post in the morning when you have stuff to do. Youβll get nothing done.π
Bags of any type are not allowed in the recycling bins.π
Yes, you can still opt-out of recycling. Itβs not mandatory by any means. π
Nobody is perfect. We just all need to keep moving forward.π
Even though I βhaveβ to take the high road, I would love to hang that left sometimes. I mean, we are a trash department. Come on, man.π§
And of course, regardless of what it says on the top ten-year old lid of your recycling bins, do not put glass in your recycling totes.π
Everyone have a great weekend! Itβs gonna be hotter than bacon grease this weekend and next week.Try to stay cool and if you feel yourself getting dehydrated, just go visit our friends to the west where they hand out that free bougie water.π
This sticks out more than that piece of salad stuck in your teeth all day. But unlike your friend who doesnβt say anything, Iβm going to let you know.π€
No bags in the recycling! πππ I thought we were past this point in our relationship. Anything that is bagged automatically gets sorted out as trash and costs us money.
So you might think you are doing us a favor but you are really not. π₯²
If you every find yourself getting one of our love notes, you are not a bad person. We all need a friendly reminder every now and then.ππ»
And of course, never, ever, put glass in the single stream containers.π
A throwback to a few years prior. π₯΄
If this is the first time you're seeing this page, make sure you follow us to stay up to date with everything regarding your trash and recycling. You could say that we like to talk trash. (Ok, than pun stunk)π
And, we need to get more followers than Parks and Rec. We have cooler trucks and mini- trash cans.
They just have a bunch of swimming pools, some golf courses, a lake or two, blah blah blah.
Sooooooo, you didn't want to listen and now you melted your tote. π
At an un-named lake in an un-named county that may or may not be west of Dover. π€
Iβm currently working on my CONOP for a cross-border raid / recovery mission.ππͺ
It will be called βOperation Sanpellegrinoβ π
Holiday Week!
The office will be closed on Thursday, July 4th.
Wednesday and Thursday customers - Heads Up! Make sure your containers are out by 7:00am on the day of collection.
Remember - No bulky items or yard waste during holiday weeks.
Have a great 4th of July! Be safe and try not to learn any of those "Life Lessons" π¬
Firework season 2024!
Double Day!!! Fun times for all! π
If you are a Wednesday customer and haven't put out your containers yet, you might want to get on that.
Remember, the office will be closed tomorrow (June 19) in celebration of Juneteenth. So Wednesday customers are being collected today.
And, if the crews are running extremely late because they encountered things like traffic congestion π€, road construction π€, and detours π€, and you do not get picked up today, we will come back on Thursday.π€
635 county residents took advantage of Free Dump Day! That's a record! The previous record was 220!
You all did a great job taking advantage of this once-a-year opportunity. Many thanks to WM for hosting this great event.
Rest up because tomorrow is the big day!
If you were tagged this week by someone you know, that might be an indication that Free Dump Day is for you.
If your neighbor casually reminded you about Free Dump Day on Saturday, June 15, That was a strong hint.
Trust me, this a great opportunity for some of you. π
Again, for those who have been sleeping under a rock all week, WM is hosting Free Dump Day at Rolling Meadows Landfill on Saturday, June 15.
7351 NW Hwy 75
Topeka KS 66618
For more information, go back and look at our earlier post.
Free Dump Day Rules:
Be safeπ
Do not bring home more than you took out.π
Make sure to keep track of your kids and take them home as well.π
and finally, the golden rule of landfill safety, Never look up at the birds. π€
Have a great weekend and Happy Father's Day to all of the Fathers out there.
Going to take a break from the free dump day messages. If you haven't figured it out by now... π«€
Next week is Juneteenth on Wednesday, June 19. The Solid Waste office will be closed.
Wednesday customers will be picked up on Tuesday. Please ensure your totes are out by 7:00am on Tuesday morning.
Of course, if you are a RecycleCoach subscriber, you would know all of this.

and by the way, Free Dump Day is this Saturday from 7:00 until noon at Rolling Meadows landfill. π
3 days away! Saturday, June 15th - 7:00 until 12:00
Free dump day at Rolling Meadows Landfill.
7351 NW Hwy 75.
4 days away.
Just going to leave this here.
Five days away!
Even Taylor S. let us know!
Six days.
SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY. (said in my best radio voice)(if you remember that, π₯°)
Sunday, day of rest part 2. That is unless you took Thursday and Friday off to go garage sale'ing.
And you probably spent too much money to buy someone else's junk.
And you put that junk into your growing pile of junk.
And now you are probably in the doghouse from you-know-whoπ.
Well, here is your chance to get back in their good graces.
Remember the ancient Kyrgyzstan'ian proverb, "One man's junk will always be one another man's junk"
Just be like Elsa and let it go.
7 days! πππππ
You have seven days to figure out a way to get a loaf of junk out to the landfill for free dump day! Only come around once a year! You had all year to ask to borrow brother in law's pickup so I don't want to hear any excuses.
That old kayak that hasn't floated since Gorbachev was in charge, it's time.
That pile of broken bricks that you were going to make a sculpture out of in the 1990s, it time.
That stuff that is in the corner of the garage that you-know-who π has been nagging you about, it's time.
One week.
A couple of things for you as we close out the week:
1. This Saturday is the Saturday collection event at the HHW from 9:00 until noon. So bring out anything you need to safely dispose of. It is also a cardboard and glass recycling location. For more information, please call 286-4381. And, they are open throughout the week as well. https://snco.gov/sw/hhwaste.php
2. Do not sell your wheelie bins. π€
3. (I'm going to get preachy here) Be kind, Stay behind. If you travel Hwy 75, you know what I am talking about. π«€
πππππ»ππππππππππΊπ²ππππππ
3. Be sure to "follow" for all of the trash news in Shawnee County.
3. Remember, Free Dump Day at the landfill is coming June 15th! Additional reminders will be posted!
3. and of course, no glass in the curbside containers. Purple bins only! https://cdn.snco.gov/solid-waste/image/content/glass_recycle_2023.jpg
3. Enjoy this weather and have a great weekend!
As you are scrolling through these posts, please do not hit that "Send Message" button. That automatically generates a message asking how to make a donation, become a member, or volunteer that you can't get rid of. π€¦
So, stay away from that button kind of like you want to stay away from Hwy 75 between the Westgate bridge and Hwy 24... π
Hey "person-who-shall-remain-nameless-but-the-posting-is-still up", don't be selling my wheelie bins. π‘
And FYI - The green ones are worth more than $25. They are vintage.
Come on, man (or woman).
Remember:
1: Next week is holiday week. See the schedule (& holiday week rules)πΊπ²
2: Water Skis are not recyclable π΅βπ«
3. No glass in the curbside containersπ
4. Have a great and safe long week! π
In case you missed it this weekend, here is a re-creation of the northern lights for you.
It was almost purple.
Purple like the color of our Ripple Glass bins where you recycle your glass.
No glass in the curbside totes! Only recycle your glass in the purple bins.
Caption this.
Remember:
1.keep it clean π
2. No glass in the recycling binsπ
Happy 2024 Eclipse Day π
As you are dropping off your glass this morning at our Ripple Glass bins, feel free to hang out for a moment to observe the eclipse. There is plenty of parking.π
Make sure you drop off your glass at the purple bins to recycle it properly.
In case you miss the eclispe all together but wanted to experience the darkness, just wait 12 hours or so.π¬
I'm wondering if I should call the office and let them know my entire street was missed? π₯΄
New driver, bless his heart.π
It happens, we are not perfect. If this occurs, simply give the office a call, leave a nice message, and leave your tote out.
Side note- 100% positive no glass in the recycling bin.
Recycle glass only in the purple recycling bins located throughout the county. π
Unsecured Ripple Glass swag at the Kansas Organization of Recyclers conference. π€«
Btw- remember, please no glass in the single stream container. Only recycle glass in our purple bins that are located throughout the county.
There are a couple of days that you do not want to miss!
Mother's Day
Father's Day
& FREE DUMP DAY!!! π
This year you can celebrate Free Dump Day and Father's day on the same weekend!!!
Free dump day at:
WM's Rolling Meadows Landfill.
7351 NW Hwy75
Topeka, KS 66618
June 15th from 7:00 - 12:00.
Now , Please pay attention!! This is not our event. π
We are merely spreading the word to help you get rid of all that junk your better half has been wanting you to get rid of for a year now. Like that chair you that you was going to refinish at some point or that mattress you picked up out of the ditch for your mother in law. π
***Pro Tip***- Do not be the first in line at 7:00am. the best time to come is around 8:00. Please do not show up right at closing time.
Non-Accepted Items:
all liquids
anything hazardous
tires
anything with refrigerant (freezers, refrigerators)
Everything else is pretty much accepted to include yard waste, tree branches, building materials, concrete, rocks, etc.
Also, make sure you follow the posted safety rules. Even though a trip to the landfill is on everyone's bucket list, it is not the place for you to take selfies at or to let your little ones run around.
You must take home all of your children. No exceptions. π
Don't take home more than you dropped off! π
And, the golden rule for landfill safety, do not look up to watch the birds. π§
Spread the word and get rid of your junk. This is a once-a-year event so make it count!
Again, this is a WM event, not Shawnee County. For any additional information, please call WM's customer service at 800-963-4776
Tornado Drill Day!
Please include checking your wheelie bins as part of your emergency preparedness plan. π€
Since we have gained a large amount of customers and now we have a passel* of new recycling customers, let's review what is accepted for recycling in Shawnee county.
Remember, If is is not on this list, throw it away (you might see that phrase againπ).
How you recycled in 2012 is not how we recycle currently. The recycling industry has changed and we have to adapt.
If you are putting stuff in your totes that is not on the list, you are Wish-Cycling.
If you are Wish-cycling, you are killing me, Smalls.π
Finally, to try and settle several dinner table arguments, you do not need to wash your recycling. Simply rinse it out.
*won another bet for using an old timey word
π¨ Tuesday Update @ 9:00amπ¨
Snowpocalypse 2024. The routes are still crawling around but as you may have noticed, some of the roads are not cleared and a tad slick. If you are skipped today, leave your containers out so that we can come back when conditions allow.
The Solid Waste office (phones) and the HHW will be closed today and will re-open tomorrow.
