Situational awareness:
Shawnee County has been placed under a Flood Watch through Thursday morning.

A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.

Excessive runoff from previous rain accumulations earlier this week may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations; including streets and roadways.

Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard. Floods can strike at any time, often with little notice. Most of these deaths occur at night, when it is more difficult to recognize flood dangers and people become trapped in vehicles. Flood safety information can be found here: https://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

EOC will continue to monitor and provide updates as they are available throughout the day.

EOC is continuing to provide updates via our media and social media tools.

Situational awareness
Shawnee County EOC and our partners have been monitoring the forecasts for the upcoming holiday and they do show the possibility for strong thunderstorms on the holiday.

The SPC has moved the Slight Risk for severe storms further to the SE of our area for the holiday on July 4, 2024; and it could shift further to the southeast as the time gets closer.

Latest indications have the frontal boundary moving quicker through the area and may be past much of the area when storms redevelop. Some of the stronger storms may have strong gusty winds and very heavy rain. Storms could be quick enough that most areas are more likely to be dry after 1900 on the holiday.

While the lower risk(s) forecasted might result in severe storms staying out of our area, there is still lightning and other risks/hazards to those engaging in outdoor activities from strong thunderstorms.

Please take time to review your weather plan ahead of time should you find yourself engaging in outdoor activities during the holiday. Severe Storm safety information can be found here:
www.weather.gov/safety/thunderstorm

Most of the areas throughout NE Kansas have seen rain accumulations; therefore, excessive runoff from heavy rains during the holiday period could result in flash flooding.

Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard. Floods can strike at any time, often with little notice. Most of these deaths occur at night, when it is more difficult to recognize flood dangers and people become trapped in vehicles. Flood safety information can be found here:
https://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

Management and organizers of all events should ensure they have at least two sources of reliable Public Warning Information in case storms impact their venues.

NWS encourages everyone to monitor the weather before any warnings are issued to increase readiness especially for those outdoor activities scheduled.

Those traveling should plan ahead and be prepared for the potential of quickly developing storms that could have devastating potential.

EOC is continuing to monitor the forecasts for the holiday, and will continue to provide updates via our public information and warning tools.

Situational awareness:
Shawnee County remains an ENHANCED outlook area for today and tonight.

Shawnee County has been placed under a Flood Watch from 1700 Tuesday through Wednesday morning.

A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a specific hazardous weather event to occur. A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.

Confidence is high that Thunderstorms will develop between 1600-1800 this afternoon.
The intensity of storms should diminish after 2300 hrs.

Torrential rainfall could lead to flash flooding as well as river flooding throughout the night and into Wednesday.

NWS encourages everyone to monitor the weather before any warnings are issued to increase readiness especially for those outdoor activities scheduled. Review sheltering plans. Have at least 2 ways to receive watch/warning info including mobile apps

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations; including streets and roadways.

This holiday could see record travel numbers and any heavy rain could lead to inundation of many of the interstates, highways, roads and streets.

Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard. Floods can strike at any time, often with little notice. Most of these deaths occur at night, when it is more difficult to recognize flood dangers and people become trapped in vehicles.

As always, please ensure you have at least two reliable and accurate information and communication resources available.

EOC will continue to monitor and provide updates as they are available throughout the day.

EOC is continuing to provide updates via our media and social media tools.

NWS:
Storms are expected to form along a boundary that sets up from Abilene to Manhattan to Hiawatha.

Storms are expected to be the strongest between 6 and 10 pm. The boundary will be slow to move so training of storms over the same areas is possible.

Storms are forecast to start weakening around 11pm. The risk for severe weather should be on the decline after 11 pm.

Damaging winds and torrential rainfall are the greatest concerns. There could initially be some hail with the storms and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.

Situational awareness
Shawnee County remains in the ENHANCED Outlook for today as well as a Heat Advisory.

Damaging winds and torrential rainfall are the greatest concerns. There could initially be some hail with the storms and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.

While no flood warnings or watches have been issued as of this report for Shawnee County, significant rainfall amounts in recent days throughout the county as well as neighboring counties are a concern.

Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard. Floods can strike at any time, often with little notice.

EOC is continuing to provide updates via our media and social media tools.

NWS
Thunderstorms are likely (60% to 90%) to develop along a front in northeast Kansas by the late afternoon.

Storms should move generally to the east and northeast.

Given the humid air in place and recent heavy rainfall, any thunderstorm activity will have a potential for very heavy rain and localized flooding.

Local Media

From Doug Meyers at WIBW-TV
The big weather story is the heat today and the severe weather risk late this afternoon/evening. All hazards are possible (hail, wind, tornado, flood) with wind being the highest risk. A few spotty showers and non-severe storms can’t be ruled out near the Nebraska border this morning but the concern is for severe storms to start to develop after 4pm. After this evening, the next highest risk for severe weather is on the 4th of July so definitely a weather pattern to continue to pay attention to the forecast everyday.

Accuweather
A zone where severe thunderstorms are forecast to be numerous from Tuesday to Tuesday night will be bounded by Omaha, Nebraska, Des Moines, Iowa, Topeka, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri.

This area may also be at a higher risk for a couple of tornadoes in the most intense storms packing high winds, hail and flash flooding.

EOC Status
The EOC will activate in a WATCH status upon issuance of a Watch for Shawnee County.

EOC is continuing to provide updates via our media and social media tools.
