September 8th-14th is Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week! This week-long celebration is a nationwide event that recognizes the work of DSPs, who support people with disabilities in their communities and in their homes. DSPs help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) lead independent lives.
All week on social media we will be highlighting and showing appreciation to all our Direct Support Staff here at Hetlinger! Pictured from left to right and time at Hetlinger: Jeremy Russell (2 years), Sierra Vornholt (1 year), and Sage Rodriguez (2 months).
Jeremy helps with our cooking classes and weekly Bible studies. Jeremy also has his certification as a personal fitness trainer. He leads the people we serve in adaptive physical fitness activities each day. The people we serve say Jeremy is one cool dude.
Sierra helps a ton in our workshop and helps with activities at our organization too. She helps coordinate different sub-contract work in our workshop each day. Everyone says Sierra is super nice, caring and fun.
Sage started with us a few month ago now. Sage helps lead fun activities each day with the people we serve such as cosmetic/manicure classes, community outings and is she is very passionate about theater. Everyone is so glad to have her a part of the Hetlinger family!
Thank you so much for all you do for our organization and living out the mission of Hetlinger!

Meet Micheal!
Micheal has spent the last 15 years in Community Living before transferring to the Transportation department 5 years ago. Michael and Transportation Clerk Rena do the route scheduling for eight drivers, including himself, for 150 riders, and track 50 vehicles. Michael says a part of his job is to make sure all of the bus routes are covered, and he couldn’t do that without Rena.
If that’s not enough to keep him busy, a couple of months ago, Michael’s scope broadened to supervise Vehicle Mechanics, Mario and Tommy. Michael and his crew take their responsibilities seriously, resulting in a much quicker turnaround for vehicle repairs. In particular, he says people don’t realize how good our mechanics are. He says residential vehicles are getting serviced in one day, and sometimes, the DSPs don’t realize the problem has already been fixed!
A milestone reached is that 90% of the repairs are completed in-house. Dustin, Director of Maintenance and Transportation says, “Michael gets all of the credit for the vehicle repair improvements.” He also says Michael has a great memory, “I've been extremely impressed at the way he can easily recall vehicle numbers and their locations as well as persons served and the locations they frequent. He thinks that his experience working in Community Living gives him immense insight on how Transportation aligns with other departments.
Michael’s favorite part of his job is interacting with the persons served. He enjoys listening to their stories and hearing what’s going on in their lives. He laughingly says, “Sometimes their lives are more interesting than mine.”
