Big news today from Supervisor Lindsey Horvath and Supervisor Janice Hahn on County reforms to the Charter including expansion of the Board representation to 9 members, an elected CEO and ethics reforms. Next Tuesday, July 9, 2024, the Board will take up their motion to add to the November election.
Bravo.
Here is a post with a list of ways to participate in Tuesday night’s Redondo Beach Council meeting regarding whether to keep Redondo’s awesome Fire Department or outsource to LA County.
Save Redondo's Fire Department Community
Sorry for the last minute notice… but I think residents need to overwhelmingly communicate to the City Council their feeling in keeping our Fire Department…
Redondo residents - please speak out on Tuesday night. This was a bad idea with ZERO potential savings back in 2019. Because the Mayor and 2 Councilmembers wanted it so badly, they got their friend Mr. Obagi to mount a recall campaign against then Councilmember Gran with the president of Rescue Our Waterfront, Wayne Craig (now a planning commissioner) running the campaign.
It failed. But no sooner had Mr. Obagi gotten himself elected to replace Mr. Gran, one of his first referrals was to bring back this item and see it through.
So here we are 5 years later with a study that cost over $100K telling us the same information. No savings, loss of service and only growing costs ahead out of our local control.
Tell the Redondo City council to keep our Redondo Fire Department and the excellent service they provide to our community.
Should we eliminate our local Redondo Beach Fire Department and contract with LA County Fire Department?
This Tuesday night (April 16th) 6pm the City Council will be discussing the Phase 2 Fire Study results and analyzing the pros and cons of moving away from our local fire department and contracting with LA County Fire instead. This is a major decision that all residents should be a part of. For more information and ways to have your voice be heard, check out my recent newsletter.

This morning I received word that Mayor Bill Brand, my former colleague on the Redondo Beach City Council, passed away last evening after a long and well-fought battle with cancer over the past 4.5 years. Bill was a relentless and passionate advocate for specific local coastal land use issues.
Michelle and I want to extend our deepest condolences to Deirdre and Bill’s family during this time. May he rest in peace.
CONNECTIONS MATTER – LET’S FINISH A LIGHT RAIL LINK BETWEEN TORRANCE, THE WESTSIDE AND HOLLYWOOD
Borrowing most of this from Bob Wolfe who currently serves on the Metro Service Council.
For over 30 years, the South Bay has primarily been a donor region to LA County as it relates to public transportation. And back then - the South Bay was advocating for a rail line. As a result - the then Green line was built and the promise of an extension further south to Torrance was made.
In 2008, Measure R was passed with the Green line being one of many specific callouts.
In 2016, L.A. County voters approved a half-cent sales tax based in part on a promise to build a light-rail lines between Torrance, LAX, the Westside and Hollywood, which is part of the long-range Measure M plan.
Transit can make a huge difference here. Our congested roadways like the San Diego Fwy, La Cienega and Crenshaw already are at capacity. How can we possibly get around a decade from now if we’re already at the breaking point?
Measure M’s promise of relief is now in jeopardy of being broken. But here’s the irony – the folks who apparently are trying to kill it are narrow-minded anti-transit forces within the South Bay itself. And to put an exclamation point on that - they are the same individuals who have used traffic as a political rallying cry for decades.
For years, I advocated for public transit options that could make a difference in curbing traffic. I also advocated for doing so while listening to residents and requesting route alternatives and/or mitigations to address concerns. The entire Redondo Council accepted my letter to Metro and sent it under signature of the Mayor to Metro. Now, the RB Council wants to backtrack and potentially take a no option position. That. Is. Shortsighted.
The Torrance Council has recently seemingly shifted their majority position and wants to do the same - but they seem to be focused on an idea of crime infecting the South Bay.
Recent polls show that almost 70% of our residents actually support a light rail between Torrance and Hollywood.
If you are in that 70% - Help to show this support and rightfully so, give South Bay residents the ability to take a train to LAX, the west side and eventually the Hollywood Bowl.
Here’s all you need to do – send a public comment – whether by email or Zoom – to the two L.A. Metro Committees that will be hearing this matter this week. (The issue should go to the full L.A. Metro board in October 2023.) And let your L.A. County Supervisor – whether Janice Hahn or Holly Mitchell -- know as well.
Here are the two scheduled Metro Committee meetings this week:
(1) Metro Planning & Programming Committee: Wed. Sept. 20 at 1 pm. Email comments are due by 5 pm on Tues. Sept. 19. Email: [email protected] and refer to Agenda #20 for the Planning & Programming Committee. Want more information? See https://boardagendas.metro.net/board-report/2023-0443
Metro board member Jacquelyn Dupont Walker chairs this committee. Also on the committee are Ara Najarian, Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Hilda Solis and L.A. city councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky.
(2) Metro Executive Management Committee: Thurs. Sept. 21 at 11 am. Email comments are due by 5 pm on Wed. Sept. 20. Email: [email protected] and refer to Agenda #20 for the Executive Mgt. Committee. Want more information? See https://boardagendas.metro.net/board-report/2023-0443
L.A. Mayor Karen Bass chairs this committee. Also on the committee are Supervisors Janice Hahn, vice-chair, and Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Hilda Solis.
Want to do more? To get info about how to give live public comment – either via Zoom or in person at Metro headquarters Downtown, email [email protected].

Supporting the South Bay C Line Extension — Streets For All Metro has plans to connect more of the South Bay by extending the C Line (Green) from the Redondo Beach (Marine) Station to the new Torrance Transit Center which would bring much needed rail to the area. This extension will provide an alternative to congestion along the busy I-405 corridor and exp

I couldn't agree more with Retired Councilmember and current Historical Commissioner Colin. And this is just one of many concerns I have with the now Council super-majority.
"A grotesque municipal power grab of Redondo’s city attorney’s office was on display at the April 4, 2023 council meeting. While Mayor Brand is out sick battling cancer, councilmembers Nils Nehrenheim, Todd Loewenstein and Zaine Obagi are quietly orchestrating the elimination of the City Attorney’s elective office.
For nearly 100 years, Redondo Beach’s Charter has specified what the voters insist remain at city hall — a city-wide elected, full-time city attorney, and prosecutor who is directly responsible to the voters. If voters become unhappy with their elected city attorney, they can recall him or vote him out at the next election.
In less than two years, Nehrenheim, Loewenstein and Obagi will leave office because of term limits or voter dissatisfaction. But, before leaving in 2025, these three members want to destroy a long established city charter law that guarantees voters the right to elect their independent, accountable to the people” city attorney.
These three rouge council members have no voter mandate to abuse the city charter, or the city attorney’s office. Voters have never suggested a lame-duck, three vote majority of the city council appoint the city attorney themselves and ignore voter scrutiny.
The power to vote for Redondo’s full time city attorney, and prosecutor is fundamental to the safety and financial well-being of the city. No voter should tolerate this elimination of their right to vote. This sneaky conduct smacks of a coup and political abuse of power.
What’s next from these three council members — appointing their own Mayor who then gets to appoint all five council members from each district? Voters should not tolerate this disrespect for the Charter, the residents, and the fundamental right to vote. If it isn’t broken, please do not fix it.
Steve Colin

Join us for a Farewell Reception This Tuesday 4pm-6:15pm - http://eepurl.com/iof2b2
Well folks... the time has come to say goodbye. I've said thank you a lot in the past 12 weeks and I truly mean it. It truly was an honor to serve our community and get to know many of you along the way despite the constant barrage of unnecessary negativity. While there are some things we didn't make happen, there were so many things we did accomplish that had direct and indirect improvements to your quality of life and that of our children.
I have all the confidence that my successor will work just as hard in communicating and representing your needs. But as I have said repeatedly - it is important for you to stay active and participate whenever humanly possible. Decisions made at the local level have immediate impacts on your day-to day lives.
With that said - I hope, if so willing, you will come join my family and I this Tuesday afternoon, April 4th, at the Main Library on the second floor for a farewell reception. Then at 6pm, I will sit on the dais one last time before officially saying goodbye and watching as Paige and the others get sworn in.
Afterwards - Laura Emdee, City Council, District 5 and myself will head over to Schooners Bar and Grill at the corner of Inglewood Ave and 190th Street. Everyone is welcome to join us there as well.
If you can't make it... then I will bid you adieu. Thank you everyone for being the best neighbors anyone could ask for. I will be keeping this Facebook account, my gmail account, as well as my cell phone active. If I can ever be of assistance... don't hesitate to reach out.
I wish you all success and happiness.
with gratitude,

Well folks, the time has come to host my final Redondo Beach District 3 community meeting.
Thanks to the Beach Cities Health District and Redondo Beach Unified School District for allowing us to use their spaces pre-COVID as gathering spots. Thanks to all the special guests, both city staff, elected officials and others who have helped provide information and insight into the how and why for all the decisions and issues that effect our daily lives. And THANKS TO YOU! I'm super grateful for all those who have participated both in person and virtually over the past 8 years. I really have enjoyed our time together and getting to know many of you on a more personal level.
As you may know - the final election results were released on Thursday and Paige Kaluderovic was declared the winner.
I'm happy to hand the baton over to someone who I believe will do her best to truly represent the myriad of opinions and concerns in our district and city-wide. Like myself, and every other elected official at the beginning, she has a lot to catch up on in the next few months - and I know she is up to the task. I have invited her to join us as a special guest for conversation and as always - an opportunity to hear what is on your mind.
While I will no longer be your representative, I will always be willing to do what I can to assist anyone... so call or email me anytime. I am keeping my gmail address and cell phone number active.

I'm Endorsing Paige Kaluderovic for Redondo Beach City Council District 3 - http://eepurl.com/ijSgXH
I've recently received questions regarding the upcoming District 3 March election and whom I was endorsing.
This is a seminal moment for what direction our residents take the city in the near future. The past 6 years have been increasingly challenging. In the past 18 months, many North Redondo residents felt unheard and disrespected by the council majority. Many of you have witnessed, especially in the past two weeks, the culmination of two decades worth of divisive politics and fear mongering literally threatening to disenfranchise District 3 voters.
With all that said, it my pleasure to endorse Paige Kaluderovic (Kah-loo-jeh-ro-vich.)
I recently met Paige and found her to be a warm, caring, inquisitive, pragmatic and uniquely authentic individual. Someone who will continue being an independent thinker/leader for our District, a true North Redondo advocate, and an empathetic voice of reason who understands what it means to represent a district full of different needs and opinions.
Paige is not a politician... just a concerned resident intent on being of service to her neighbors for all the right reasons. She decided to run as a result of my colleagues refusing to give me, asking on your behalf, $19,000 for a single crossing guard at the Lilienthal/Ralston intersection.
As a mother Paige intimately understands that positive and enduring relationships with the RBUSD are integral to our children's school experience. As a small business owner, she knows the challenges that affect our commercial partners both locally and regionally. As a homeowner in the Franklin Park area, Paige knows how important North Redondo issues like the Green Line, the Galleria redevelopment, and the potential for the vast majority of new housing (as approved by the council majority) forced primarily in D3, D4 and D5 creates impacts on our quality of life.
I have found Paige to be a fast learner who asks the right questions and is determined to find the necessary answers so she can best make important and complicated decisions on our behalf.
Paige will do the hard work to truly listen and understand your concerns, be responsive, and continue functioning as that important go-between for you with city staff. I believe that she is the ONLY candidate who will ensure North Redondo priorities are not lost in a sea of competing waterfront needs. She is not beholden to special interests or the council majority. She is beholden to you.
You've been wonderful neighbors, especially in the past 8 years as your representative. Last week - you sent a strong message to my colleagues about the kind of local government and behavior you expect from your elected officials. I respectfully request that you, your friends and neighbors mark your ballots in the coming weeks and elect Paige Kaluderovic as my replacement. I guarantee, you won't regret it.
Thanks for hearing me out.
with gratitude,
Christian Horvath
