THE HISTORY and THE BEGINNING OF MILLAR’S PLACE SCHOOL AND FARM

A Little School House and Preschool (formerly known as Millar’s Place), was established in Seattle, Washington in September of 1999. Later relocating to beautiful Traverse City Michigan in 2010, A Little School House became the “Place Where Children Grow” providing early childhood education to 30 children each day. Due to the ever growing need for child care and preschool, owners Lori and Brooks Millar have been eager and dreaming of expansion.

July of 2021 brought the dream to reality. A Little School House found the opportunity to grow preschool, and school aged summer camp programming in a farm like setting, while allowing the current location to offer added care for children ages 3 months-3 years of age. The new addition is located on Smith Road Traverse City, MI 49496 (one mile from the current and continuing location).

The original farm house of the once divided property where Brooks and Lori currently reside is one again, and now the home of Millar’s Place School and Farm. With the addition of this house and land, the classroom takes more learning time outside where hands on exploration will begin. While outdoors the children have the opportunity to gain new skills with activities like gardening, care taking of animals, nature walks through 19 acres of land, playtime on the logs & boulders, rope swings, sand boxes, and more. When inside the classroom the students will continue to build skills in language arts, science, mathematics, arts, and creative learning. The Farm School philosophy brings life skills and nature together.

This new property provides the opportunity for A Little School House to expand the preschool curriculum for the first time to include a new young 5’s program and annual school aged summer camps. This setting also allows the continuation of producing well rounded preschoolers bound for their next big adventure—Kindergarten, and helps to build a stronger foundation for greater success in future education.

It was a special 2 weeks waiting for the classroom monarch butterfly…he was released today. Nature is quite fascinating!
