Today, we commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, celebrate Black history, and reflect on the ongoing struggle for freedom and racial equality. On this important day in 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to proclaim the end of slavery.
This day provides us an opportunity to honor and celebrate the great contributions of the Black community while striving for a more equitable society. We hope that you all have a meaningful Juneteenth, and if you would like to learn more about its historical and cultural significance, check out Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Check out how this Ferris Alum, Dr. Khalid el-Hakim, is sharing and celebrating Black history across the United States!
Inspired by the words of Minister Louis Farrakhan, El-Hakim established the Black History 101 Mobile Museum, comprised of over 10,000 original artifacts ranging from the painful era of the trans-Atlantic slave trade to the vibrant culture of hip hop. The museum has traveled to 43 states and over 1,000 institutions in the past 25 years, teaching Black history to countless individuals across diverse settings. Most recently, the museum made its way to Port Huron in collaboration with the Port Huron Branch NAACP Adult and Youth Councils.
We are so proud of the amazing work our alums accomplish every single day.

Even as a little girl battling leukemia, Luci Archer knew she wanted to be a helper. Diagnosed at the age of 6, Archer was inspired by a child life specialist at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids who helped make her cancer treatment just a little less scary.
Fast forward years later, and Archer is walking across the graduation stage with a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, beginning her journey of helping children in similar situations. Archer shared, "At the end of the day, I came out of my childhood cancer a better person because of my experiences and I want to give back in return".
