The Objective: To provide cadet/students and ship’s crew exposure to maritime military protection capabilities and training in maritime security tactics.
The T/S State of Michigan along with the cadets and crew were able to participate in a multi-day, group, military training exercise, "Northern Strike". Military groups boarded the T/S by air and by water executing tactical security measures and practicing medical and lifesaving techniques

Supported by her team, T/S State of Michigan Assistant Engineer T.Lepley donned all the correct personal protective equipment, including a fall harness and fall arrestors before she climbed the height of the aft mast to replace the Range Light this week.

Bon Voyage! After a few days at port in Traverse City, cadets onboard the T/S State of Michigan have set sail for Phase 2 of summer sea projects!

Centerfold worthy 📖 GLMA friend and NMC employee Dave Weaver had the perfect backdrop for his classic car photo, gracing the centerfold of Cruis'n Media Magazine in their July/August 2024 issue...We know it's suppose to about the car, but the T/S State of Michigan always looks great 🤩

A Shakedown Cruise is used to test a ship before a long trip... and when both the future Bride and Groom are both mariners (and GLMA alumni) what better way to prep for their trip down the aisle than a shakedown trip down the fantail? 🛳🎊
When Cadets out on their sea project heard that 2 GLMA alumni, both sailing on the T/S State of Michigan, were getting married this fall, they enthusiastically organized a Shakedown Cruise of their nuptials, including a bouquet of wrenches for the Engineer and Cadets playing the roles of wedding party + ring bearer

MDOT UPDATE: Segment 2 begins tomorrow, July 8th

Motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists should be aware that the Michigan Department of Transportation will begin Segment 2 of the Grandview Parkway project on July 8th. MDOT's contractor Team Elmer's will conduct work activities for 24/7 for the first 5 days, through the evening of July 12th.

-Traffic shift to take place at 9 pm on July 7th
-East and west traffic will be shifted to the north side of the Grandview Parkway while reconstruction begins on the southside. The north side reconstruction is anticipated to take place after Labor Day
-The intersection at E. Front/Grandview Parkway will be closed until approximately mid-August
-Barricades will be placed directly south of work activities at Cass, Hall, and Oak Streets. Union and Park Streets will remain open.

Even while the training ship is away, there's still a lot to see from the dock! 🛥🚁🛩
Spectators were treated to awesome views of the annual airshow this past weekend including, but not limited to: U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City helicopters and U.S. Navy Blue Angels!
Please remember that during the National Cherry Festival there is an increase of both foot and vehicle traffic around the academy. Please plan ahead and drive safely!

🔥Lady of Steam (Sabrina) is a part of a Great Lakes shipping company, one of the few remaining that employ steam technology to operate commercial ships. Raised in the industry, she's been surrounded by ships her entire life. She graduated from the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, where she earned a license as a steam marine engineer with unlimited horsepower. Here, she is pictured aboard the Steam ship WILFRED SYKES, equipped with a 7,000hp steam turbine, built in 1949. Way to go Sabrina 👩‍🔧🙌
