Recently I have seen posts from local stylists claiming to not use glosses, toners, etc.; with the implication that a stylist has done something wrong, or is hiding something if a gloss is used on a guest’s hair 😕 I am sure some of my own guests have seen these posts as well which made me want to share a little knowledge of why I do use glosses frequently as well as when I don’t. Hopefully, this helps broaden the understanding of this much misunderstood and oftentimes maligned process 🤔
The primary purpose of a gloss is to return hair to its normal pH. When you color the hair, your cuticle swells to remove or deposit color. After this process, it’s best to return hair back to its natural pH. But the gloss I add also accomplishes the following:
Refining tone to a guest’s preferred color. Want to be a cool icy blonde or an eye catching red?A gloss is going to be your best friend. Everyone’s hair lifts to a warmer color (anything from red-orange to yellow) The darker the hair starts, the warmer the color left behind after the full processing time. If the guest has existing permanent color, the residual tone left behind after lifting can even be uneven. Glosses are what adds those beautiful colors back into the hair while also returning it to its optimal pH.
Glosses protect your hair from water. The water in our area is contains a large amount of chlorine and minerals. If the cuticle is left swelled, the hair will quickly absorb these from your water, causing discoloration. This can also can make your hair weak and brittle.
Balances and adds longevity to your color. All hair color fades, natural and artificial. How much your hair fades between retouches depends on a few factors including porosity, environment, etc. Glosses help refresh color and return vibrancy and shine.
After all of this, there are a few instances where I may not add a gloss. Clients who may not need a gloss are almost always getting highlights on already lighter toned hair. The small amount of warmth left over is minimal and can be toned with a color depositing shampoo and pH can be returned to normal with a good conditioner.

Stunning 🤩 and low maintenance. Who would not live to have this fabulous dimensional color that requires visiting the salon a couple of times over the year! 🙌🏻❤️ These “lived-in” colors require a little more of a time investment at each visit, but you can definitely spread out those appointments.

In addition to traditional products, I also provide my clients with natural and organic options in the salon.
