This summer, middle school students in Missouri participated in a "mini-medical school" camp focused on cancer biology, while fourth to sixth graders experimented with running speeds between humans and dinosaurs.
These camps were part of the University of Missouri's summer programs, supported by The Connector, which connects young learners with university researchers for hands-on scientific experiences.
Christal Huber, senior programming coordinator for The Connector, noted the benefits of authentic science experiences for youth, emphasizing the importance of engaging students with scientists and promoting interest in science careers.

Mizzou College of Health Sciences
Wilson Majee, associate professor of health sciences and public health with Mizzou College of Health Sciences, brought extension faculty to South Africa this summer to teach the concepts of the Neighborhood Leadership Academy to leaders and faculty in the area.
“I came to where I am because of MU Extension,” Majee said. “Bringing extension faculty to Africa with me this summer was a powerful and transformative experience. MU Extension’s 4-H Center for Youth Development welcomed 50 middle- and high-school-aged 4-H’ers at its 22nd annual 4-H College and Career Pathways Conference on the MU campus this July.

The next virtual Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Level 3 class begins Sept. 9 at 9 a.m.
This program helps older adults improve their strength, flexibility and balance. Eight upper and lower body strengthening exercises are prescribed in each class, along with warm-up and cool-down stretches.

Over $3.7 million in Business Builder grants are now available to support projects in Missouri and surrounding states.
The first round of funding, offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in collaboration with the Heartland Regional Food Business Center, opened on Aug. 15. Applications will be accepted until Oct. 15, 2024.

Online microbusinesses are thriving, driven by the growing demand for e-commerce products and services. By early 2024, Missouri had nearly 283,000 active microbusinesses, or 5.9 per 100 adults, though still below the U.S. average of 8.7.

🍼👶 August is . Breastfeeding has many benefits for both mother and child but sometimes breastfeeding moms can't always feed their baby directly so it's important to practice safe handling and storage practices.
Follow these tips:
• Storing: Keep breast milk in clean, labeled containers. Store in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 6 months.
• Thawing: Thaw frozen milk in the fridge overnight or warm it gently in warm water. Never microwave!
• Feeding: Use thawed milk within 24 hours. Discard any leftover milk after feeding.
