When your brain is in a state of relaxed happiness, it produces electrical patterns called alpha brain waves. If you’ve ever tried meditation, you know the feeling alpha brain waves create -- a sense of peaceful wellbeing.
Nature increases your alpha brain waves too. One study found that a 15-minute walk in the woods boosts people’s alpha brain waves at levels equivalent to meditation.
And just looking at photos of nature increased people’s alpha waves more than looking at photos of city streets.
🌱
But your brain responds to fresh air, too.
Plants and trees release sweet-smelling molecules called phytoncides into the air. These compounds make up many of the scents of the forest. The smell of pine trees, the deep scent of damp leaves, the menthol freshness of eucalyptus -- they all come from phytoncides.
Breathing in phytoncides may help relieve depression and improve mood. In rats, phytoncides boost serotonin levels -- the same brain chemical that antidepressants increase.

Get outside!
Dose high!
Something that I wish everyone became aware of 👇
Your light environment may be one of the reasons why you can’t lose weight.
Too much artificial light at night causes leptin & insulin resistance.
Too little natural light and you aren’t making cortisol and thyroid hormone at the right time. Both of these are necessary for energy and a proper metabolism.

Dealing with perimenopause or newly entering menopause?
If you missed our talk today; Jaime Sue Hill, Dr Luba Khakam and myself talk about all the ways that we can approach menopause holistically.
We would love to hear your questions and if you have any topics that you would like us to cover in future, drop us a comment below 👇 👇👇
Yup, the world may seem like a crazy place right now. But remember that whatever is going on “out there”, doesn’t have to impact “in here”.
Fear and hate create a virus in the nervous system that impacts you on all levels of your health.
So be careful with what you surround yourself with right now. Pace yourself. Because it isn’t going to get more quiet and it isn’t going to get more calm.
You are magnificent and there is immense power in what you feel, believe and in the stories that you tell yourself.
The more shocking the story, the deeper the hit and the more profound the impact.
You have all the tools; no outsourcing needed. Get back to the basics that your nervous system requires to feel safe - nutritious food, deep sleep, movement, time in nature, stillness, and sunshine.
Reach out if you want some help.

Mitochondria!
The powerhouse of the cell.
They make energy (ATP) and water.
But we now know that nearly all illnesses stems from mitochondrial dysfunction, which equates to a loss of energy to the cell. To the organ. To the organism.
But these organelles do more than just make energy.
One of the many things that they so is make pregnenolone. And that’s our master hormone. The one that makes all the other ones that you are more familiar with.
So how do we optimize or heal our mitochondrial?
Supplements can help:
B vitamins
CoQ10
ALA
Omega 3s
But lifestyle matters too.
Sunlight
Sauna
Red light
Fasting (at the right time of year)
Grounding to gather electrons
These things are simple. Easy. Attainable.
They should be non-negotiable.
Get outside. Kick off your shoes.
Because what you are looking for, may be free !
and yea, it may require you to do something different but it’s better than taking hormones or feeling terrible.
Don’t get comfortable with feeling poorly.
Because small steps can lead to big changes!
We live from the inside out!
Meaning that what we believe is what we see.
So….Watch your thoughts and choose new ones if they aren’t serving you.
Our thoughts create our experience of the world.
New thoughts create new experiences and a new story of the life that you are living.
Happy Mother’s Day! And that includes our Mother Earth, with her gifts and healing!

There’s medicine in the weeds, my friends!
🌱
Dandelion has been valued by herbalists and naturopathic doctors for it’s versatility. A diuretic, a nutritive, it’s helpful for blood pressure, liver and gallbladder disorders, acts as a mild laxative, is high in potassium, and is a tonic for the body.
But sometimes we don’t need to ingest the medicine to feel it’s benefits.
For me, being amidst this plant helps to release fear (kidneys), clears anger (liver) and helps me process emotions (solar plexus).
Especially this weekend!
🌱
Lean into nature.
If you are drawn to a plant, perhaps it has something to offer you.

Birdsong acts as a safety signal for our nervous system !
Healing takes place when we feel safe and birds only sing when there are no predators around.
This is why birdsong can be so healing.
It reminds us that we are safe!
We live in a culture of “busy”. And I get it! I’ve been the person running errands between patients and creating the never ending to-do list as a distraction.
But the truth is, that living with chronically high cortisol impedes our healing. It perpetuates most disease states and it robs us of the moment.
In a culture of instant gratification, we forget that the things that really matter actually take time.
Building a relationship
Developing a skill
Cooking a good meal
Creating art
These take time.
So does healing!

Natural hair care does exist and just like natural medicine; it is effective.
We just have to know our options and do things differently.
Playing possum is a common term used when we talk about feigning ignorance.
This is a sassy post but it segues into the ignorance many people still embody when it comes to “health” care.
One of the most common questions that I receive is “are your services and labs covered by insurance?”
Short answer: no
Long answer: health insurance covers testing deemed necessary by your P*P. And I can’t do something different within the same system that has failed to provide you with answers, solutions and actionable steps!!
Q: can my doctor order the same labs that you are ordering?
A: you can ask them to run the tests but if they had already done adequate testing than we wouldn’t be having this conversation. They didn’t deem it necessary.
Q: why doesn’t my doctor look at the same markers?
A: Because they aren’t trained to dive deeper, focus on prevention and are beholden to justifying testing to insurance companies. Ask THEM why.
Q: Why is it so expensive?
A: That’s relative.
We spend money on many things.
My initial testing runs between $280-400.
What do you pay monthly in insurance premiums? Do you have results and answers for what you have paid for? Do you have solutions and actionable steps?
I would say that monthly insurance premiums for basic testing and poor outcomes is expensive.
A basic ferritin costs me & you $6 but you insurance charges $50.
What you value isn’t expensive!
What you don’t value is expensive!
Q: will you explain to my doctor why you want to order the tests that you are requesting?
A: Absolutely not.
Would you ask your new architect to explain how they would build your new home addition to your old architect who has an outdated vision of what you requested?
If you want your health care covered by insurance than it’s time that we ask our insurance companies some questions.
If you expect your health insurance to keep you healthy, than it’s time to reconsider.
Personally, I don’t want insurance coverage for my service.
Why?
Because I like 30, 45 min & 60 minute visits.
I like knowing my patients and the details of their lives.
I love building long lasting relationships with people who prioritize their health and who are empowered to make change.
I adore being able to have the time to teach, to talk and to actually listen.
I am curious and dive deep in order to figure out “why” my patients don’t feel well.
And I refuse to be told that I am limited to 7 or 10 min visits & relegated to running basic blood work.
I refuse to look at a patient who is depressed, desperate and sincerely asking for solutions and tell them that there’s nothing else that I can do.
So, if your health care doesn’t provide what you need, then seek other answers elsewhere but also start asking why that may be.

Did you know that blue light can wake up even the blind? (I didn’t!!)
That’s because when light enters the eye, it stimulates cells that contain something called melanopsin.
Previously we thought that only rod & cone cells were contained in the retina, but we now know that a new type of cell (intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells) are also present and the melanopsin inside them responds to light.
They have nothing to do with vision!
So our eyes are important sensors of our external environment and blocking blue (and green light) at night helps to orient our bodies in time and space.
