Magnetic 'metal seed' that destroys brain tumours in ten minutes invented by British scientists Deadly brain tumours could be removed in just ten minutes with a groundbreaking new treatment which uses MRI scanners to heat up cancer cells until they die. The new therapy, developed by University College London, involves injecting a tiny magnetic metal ‘seed’ into the bloodstream and directing it to the site of the cancer. [ 272 more words ]

In 1983, Robert “Bob” Kagan, a 36-year-old pathologist, set out on foot from Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, looking for a place to birth an industry. He’d find it in a McDonald’s, which would become one of America’s first outpatient MRI centers. Kagan had become convinced of the promise of magnetic resonance imaging, a now-commonplace technology that was then still experimental. [ 336 more words ]

In medicine, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to show what's happening inside the body, producing dynamic images of our internal organs. Using similar technology that tracks blood flow, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans can show neuroscientists neural activity, indicating what parts of the brain light up when, for instance, a person thinks of an upsetting memory or starts craving co***ne. Among women with dense breast tissue, for whom traditional mammograms are less effective at detecting cancer, who request additional screening after a negative mammogram, abbreviated breast MRI (AB-MR) may be a valuable cancer detection tool. In a study of 195 asymptomatic women with dense breast tissue who had a negative mammogram within the previous 11 months, AB-MR detected five additional cancers after a negative screening mammography, according to preliminary findings from a Penn Medicine team presented this week at the Radiological Society of North America meeting in Chicago. Magnetic resonance imaging appears to be safe for patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices, even for chest imaging, according to a new study by researchers from the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City. In the past, MRIs have been considered dangerous for people who have the devices. However, the new study, "Real World MRI Experience with Non-Conditional and Conditional Cardiac Rhythm Devices After MagnaSafe," published in the Journal of Clinical Electrophysiology, found that MRI imaging can be safely performed on patients with devices. Researchers and clinicians now have a new tool to help them further their understanding of disease and the complexities of the human body. Scientists have made incredible strides in understanding the world around us. They’ve shot astronauts into space, explored deep beneath the ocean and created powerful computers that fit in our pockets. The cosmos might be well-mapped, but they’re still searching for a cure for cancer and just beginning to understand the complex connections in the brain. [ 1,052 more word ]

Researchers from St. Michael's Hospital have made what are believed to be two world first discoveries: an MRI can measure kidney damage and can predict future kidney function within one year while avoiding needle biopsies. A new type of MRI scan can predict the risk of having a stroke, researchers have said in a study. The non-invasive technique, developed by scientists at the University of Oxford, predicts whether plaques in the carotid arteries are rich in cholesterol and therefore more likely to cause a stroke. Carotid arteries supply the brain with blood. The rupture of fatty plaques can block them and possibly starve the brain of oxygen, causing potentially debilitating and life-threatening strokes. Researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have developed a method that could make magnetic resonance imaging—MRI—multicolor. Current MRI techniques rely on a single contrast agent injected into a patient's veins to vivify images. The new method uses two at once, which could allow doctors to map multiple characteristics of a patient's internal organs in a single MRI. The strategy could serve as a research tool and even aid disease diagnosis. [ 261 more words ]

Women in general can be considered for a 3D mammogram if they are being screened for breast cancer. However, women with dense tissue in their breast should not consider anything else, but 3D imaging. The ability to view the entire breast is far more difficult with dense tissue. Therefore, suspicious tissue or masses could easily be missed, reducing the opportunity of early detection. When it comes to diagnosing breast cancer, a breast MRI is relatively new, but is becoming one of the most dependable tests for detecting abnormalities in the breast. It uses a powerful magnet to produce hundreds of images, using gadolinium, a non-radioactive contrast. Although, the contrast isn’t always used, especially for those who have a sensitivity to iodine. Your doctor might ask for a breast MRI in addition to other tests, such as an ultrasound. [ 411 more words ]

Approved by the FDA in 2011, 3D mammography is technology that allows for multiple images of breast tissue, and recreate it in a 3D image of the breast. CAD does not change the way the patient goes through a mammogram. The patient will not notice a difference in the test, but will benefit in the results. The radiologist can review a mammogram first, without CAD analysis. This allows them to make a preliminary interpretation. During that evaluation, the radiologists notes which, if any, areas are suspicious. After that review, if there are areas of concern, then CAD software is applied to the mammogram, and will highlight areas that need further examination. [ 86 more words ]

CAD can help radiologists detect cancer, as well as the size and location of the cancer, more accurately and quickly than before. And, this could alter a treatment plan for a cancer patient. For example, before 3D breast MRI with CAD, a patient might have been scheduled for a lumpectomy, but there could be additional undetected cancer. Now that they can better see the entire breast, many of the patients who would have gone through just a lumpectomy, and possibly leaving unseen cancer behind to foster, will now opt for a mastectomy.
