Brad Nord’s next print release from his Midnight Garden series is the aptly named Path Through the Night Garden. Of the piece, the artist writes, “Lit by the stars you see the old, dimly lit white lines moving through the night garden, and you find that you, yourself are drawn to tread upon them. Your feet carry you, softly declaring each step to no-one but the ancient chalk way that stretches out and overlaps into the mists and darkness. Above your head, the celestial bodies align and coalesce to both watch and guide you, witnesses to your evenings journey along the path.” Flanked by the path of ancient, deeply rooted trees, your eyes meet those of an open, energetic sky. What passes between is magic.

Brad Nord’s newest print release with Two Selves Gallery is an other-wordly piece, the Willows Clearing. Brad’s use of bright colors and detailed textures tickles all the senses with this print. He envisions us, the viewer, making our way through a night garden, drawn by faint rustling on lavender winds, pushing through thick mist and vines. We emerge into this clearing, where, faced with an infinite sky, a massive tree’s thick braided roots remind us we are grounded to this earth, listening to the soft grasses whispering secrets as they sway. Here, in the Willows Clearing, are the answers we seek.

Life’s Wake by Shang Chengxiang

渡 No. 2 , a black and white graphite drawing, is the second in Shang’s Ferry Crossing series. Because the two pieces in this series evoke starkly contrasting emotions, Shang gave the print its own name - Life’s Wake. The zebra in Ferry Crossing stands passively in a boat, powered only by the whims of the tide. In contrast, the tiger in this piece creates the tide and, in Shang’s own words, uses its “own power to explore the unknown.” The tiger perseveres against water toward the swirling, psychedelic sky, firm both in the knowledge of what it wants and in its own capability to procure it.

In addition to the main edition, which is true to the black and white original, Shang created 6 uniquely hand embellished prints that were each printed in editions of 10. Here are the print details:

’sWake

Shang’s latest print, “Becoming” represents a departure from previous work, and yet feels eerily familiar. The bright red mushrooms sprouting from the floral bed of the pastel chair is a stark contrast that prompts the viewer to ask why.

In nature, mushrooms are the visible part of a vast fungal organism that weaves through soil and connects to the roots of the trees that stand there. Together, they share and transfer resources that bolster their collective health and ensures their mutual survival.

When asked why he painted the two mushrooms, Shang referenced conversations he had with his father during a recent illness: “Dad said that I didn't like eating mushrooms when I was young. At that time, he told me that you would like them gradually. At that time, I asked why. Dad just said: because I didn't eat them when I was young, but I can eat them when I grow up. You will become me, and I will become you!”

TSG is thrilled to announce its first exclusive print release with Micah Ofstedahl, an acrylic painter out of the Pacific Northwest whose work depicts the intersection of science and nature. Each of his myriad pieces reflects an “observable scientific subject matter” like “single-cell radiolarians, the facets of a bee's eye, or anatomy right down to the cellular level” superimposed upon a crisp nature-scape, drawing the consciousness to in-between spaces.

Micah’s latest piece, The Observer, is based on an autumn visit to a reflecting pond in southern New Hampshire. Inspired by the patterns in the veins of leaves and mesmerized by the change in perspective from the ground to the surrounding mountain vistas, Micah drew parallel veins from the viewer's perspective on the ground to the height of the distant mountain. The Observer is emblematic of many of Micah’s newer pieces, which draw on the nuance of perspective. Depending on your interpretation, each vein depicts a single moment in time from many perspectives, or many moments in time from a single perspective. And regardless, all converge on a mountain’s peak, from which perspective is altered completely.

Two Selves Gallery’s annual Intersenory Gathering is a special event that requires the hard work and coordination of so many people. TSG would never be able to pull off the show without the support of the Gallery’s crew, friends, and associated artists.

We also want to thank Arrowheads Estate, our co-hosts and literal hosts, who let us take over their space with nothing short of the warmest welcome.

The show requires year-round preparation by TSG and coordination with Arrowheads. The week prior to the show, the Arrowheads crew works hard to clear the way for TSG and sweats alongside us in a massive effort to transform the venue into a gallery.

TSG also extends a huge thank you to the artists who trust us with their art and have faith in this untraditional group show. It’s no small effort to get art to us from all over the world.
