Last week, I became the first ever female president of the Michigan Academy of Plastic Surgeons (MAPS). There was no fanfare or ceremony, but there was something better: two extremely accomplished women leaders within the field of plastic surgery were there with me. One, Dr. Linda Phillips, was my program director when I was a resident. The other is Dr. Lynn Jeffers, who was the ASPS president during COVID and is currently a trustee of the AMA (and I bet future AMA president). They both presented about leadership, and I felt like I was in the presence of giants.
My co-resident from UTMB, Dr. Anthony Zacharek, put an amazing meeting together. I was inspired by all of the speakers, many of whom spoke about getting involved in leadership and how to mentor the next generation of plastic surgeons.
The students and residents that shared their research made me feel confident that plastic surgery will continue to grow and innovate. Thanks to Dr. Donna Tepper, Chip Vaughn of MTF, and Sam Riga of Mentor for hosting a Womens Plastic Surgeon meetup where I got to talk to some of these women who are in the early stages of their careers and already want to get involved.
It look me a long time to find my place and my voice in my field, and I intend to speak up and make myself heard. I’m excited to bring new ideas to our organization. And excited to collaborate with the amazing plastic surgeons of Michigan.

Why are my eyes on the screen and not the patient? I am peforming a regional block before the start of surgery. By watching the screen, I can use a portable ultrasound device to show me where to precisely place a needle to deliver long acting local anesthesia.
Not only does this help the patient have reduced discomfort after surgery, it reduces discomfort during surgery. My anesthesiologist uses less gas and less narcotics to keep the patient comfortable. In turn, this reduces post operative nausea and vomiting.
This quick procedure-before-the-procedure has been a game changer for my patients.
