STEMM: Student Thinking Enrichment through Mathematics Mentors - an AmeriCorps Program
The Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers at the University of Arizona was created in August, 2001 to address the shortage of qualified mathematics teachers at the middle and high school levels. Its goals are to retain mathematics teachers currently in the field and to attract mathematically talented college students to the teaching profession.
Among the many programs that the Center offers, the AmeriCorps Program Student Thinking Enrichment through Mathematics Mentors (STEMM) seeks to engage University of Arizona students in secondary (6th - 12th grade) mathematics classrooms during the school day to support teachers' student-centered curriculum across the greater Tucson limits. The college students receive training in foundational mathematics and effective tutoring and student-centered support each week by participating in Math196 A (while earning 1 mathematics credit). The college students also work with their AmeriCorps cooperating teacher to select 3 high-need students that will receive consistent and targeted math mentoring by the college student.
STEMM also engages the teachers in the New Teacher Induction Program as math mentors for three of their high-need students, providing a more intensive level of support for those students. The New Teacher Induction teachers also receive targeted biweekly mentoring from their Induction Coaches.
Among the roles that the program will play in and out of mathematics classrooms and students lives, the college students, cooperating teachers, and community members volunteer together at STEM nights and play an integral role in highlighting the importance of STEM studies throughout the greater Tucson community.
