We’re right in between the 78th anniversary of the world’s first nuclear explosion and the release of the movie Oppenheimer. So here’s a lead-lined, pressurized M4 Sherman tank used by Physicist Herbert Anderson to help determine the yield of “the gadget” with soil samples at the Trinity test site in July 1945.

The rubber hits the road on the origin story of the Humvee on this day 40 years ago, March 22, 1983. About 55,000 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs), better known as Humvees, are ordered for U.S. military. Here’s the foundation’s MMIST CQ-10A SnowGoose UAV mounted on the back of a Humvee on display at Pima Air & Space Museum. This UAV could be launched from a moving Humvee to deliver supplies. Another one can occasionally be seen tugging aircraft and transporting Pima staff.

I didn’t think so.
The M103 was a U.S. Army and Marines, heavy tank class, armored vehicle with a huge 120 mm cannon. They were originally designed in the early 50s and in service until the mid 70s, but rendered obsolete with the concept of a main battle tank.
Free admission at Pima Air and Space tomorrow for U.S. Armed Forces and veterans with ID for Veterans Day. Come see the 5 military vehicles now on display with 400 aircraft.

The Husky VMMD (vehicle-mounted mine detection) features a V-shaped hull, modules that are replaceable in case of a blast, bulletproof glass windows, and a host of equipment for protected mobility and route clearance. It was originally designed in the 70s for the South African Army.

We’ve got some new military vehicles out on display in anticipation of the new museum. The M60 is a main battle tank designed in the late 50s. This upgraded M60A1 version was developed in the early 60s. Variants are still in service in many countries today.

Three months into the siege on Stalingrad with 90% of the heavily bombarded city captured, the Red Army is clinging to the shores of the Volga and factory district. Stalin, refusing to lose the city with his namesake, launches Operation Uranus on this day, Nov. 19, 1942. The counterattack suffers heavy casualties and pits thousands of tanks at odds like this Soviet T-34 and captured German Panzer, but leads to a crucial turning point in WW2.
What’s the deal with the tanks at Pima Air and Space Museum? Learn about the past, present, and future of our museums with the Executive Director at a free event hosted by the Southern Arizona Heritage & Visitor Center for the grand re-opening of the Pima County Historic Courthouse on Tuesday, November 16th at 10-11am. On this day in history, Nov. 10, 1775, the U.S. Marine Corps was established. Happy 246th birthday USMC! This Studebaker M29 Weasel we’ll display from the National Museum of the Marine Corps was used for transporting troops and supplies in WWII. The versatile Weasel was used extensively in Europe, including on D-Day and at the Battle of the Bulge. Marines used them throughout the Pacific Theater including at Iwo Jima and Okinawa providing invaluable support over difficult terrain. It will be an honor to preserve so much of the Corps’ history like this example.
