Interstate 10 (refered to as the "Tucson freeway" in newspapers at the time) under construction at Speedway Blvd. in the early 1960s.

By Summer 1962, completed freeway sections allowed travelers to go from Prince Road to 6th Ave. The non-stop trip to Phoenix as still a few years away.

Hi Clients, Family, Friends. You may have heard about the recent ruling against NAR (National Association of Realtors) and NAR's proposed settlement regarding Real Estate Agents and commissions. What does it mean? We don't know yet. And, there is no clear answer on when or what the resolution will be.

What we do know is that we, your BestLifeAZHomes team, Joel Garcia and Jane Sage with Tierra Antigua Realty, will continue doing what we have always done. With a combined 26 years of Real Estate experience in Southern Arizona, We LOVE Real Estate and working on behalf of our Clients to provide the best service and advice. Whether it is Buying or Selling your Home, Buying or Selling Commercial Property, Investment Property, we LOVE it ALL!

What you may not be aware of is that we, as REALTORS®, follow a detailed Code of Ethics, where the primary fiduciary duty is to our Clients to promote their interests. That means to put our Client's interest above our own. Additionally, to deal honestly with all parties to a transaction. In Arizona it takes 90 hours of classes/course work to qualify to take the licensing test. But that's just for licensing. We take hundreds of hours of additional classes and attend seminars on a myriad of Real Estate subjects and issues, obtaining additional designations to increase our knowledge to provide the best service possible to our Clients. We meet with different Title Companies, Loan Officers and Vendors/Inspectors, etc. to let Clients know the services that are available to them.

Whatever the outcome, Joel and I will continue to be here for our Clients, Family and Friends to assist with their Real Estate needs.

Best, Jane

The History of The Chicago Store.

Back in 1919, Clara Levkowitz moved with her family from Chicago, Illinois to Tucson, Arizona, and started the Chicago Store, named in her home city’s honor. It was a “Tienda Barata,” as you can see in the photo.

The Chicago Store bought and sold everything under the sun, from pocket watches to guns to clothing to sundries.

The store thrived at the corner of Mesilla and Meyer, just the first of four downtown locations Chicago Store would eventually inhabit.

In 1947, after 28 years at the corner of Mesilla and Meyer, Chicago Store moved into its next home at 105 West Congress Street.

Clara Levkowitz’s sons, Phil and Joe, took over the business. They continued to buy and sell anything of value, inculding musical instruments.

In February of 2016, they moved into their fourth and current downtown location and the store has been handed down to Clara Levkowitz’s grandson, Mark. This is a third-generation family business.

What to do in your garden in MARCH!

Planting
🍃 Sow annual seeds outdoors for coreopsis, cosmos, marigold, and zinnia.
🍃Plant perennials: aloe, angelita daisy, bee balm, blackfoot daisy, California fuchsia, chocolate flower, golden dyssodia, lantana, prairie zinnia, salvias (sages) and tufted primrose.
🍃 Plant shrubs: fairy duster, bee bush, black dalea, little-leaf cordia, Texas rangers and yellow bells.
🍃Plant trees and shrubs of all types, including citrus. (Refer to Low Desert Citrus Varieties AZ 1001)https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/pubs/az1001_0.pdf February and March are the best months to plant bare root trees although they can be planted anytime during the dormant season (between leaf fall and swelling of new buds.) Try to plant 30 days before bud break. Containerized plants are best planted in late September through early October. (Refer to Planting Guidelines: Container Trees and Shrubs AZ 1022).https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/pubs/az1022.pdf
🍃 Plant container roses in March. (Refer to Rose Care in the Low Desert AZ1304 )https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/pubs/az1304.pdf
🍃 Vegetables and Herbs: sow seeds outdoors or plant starts for sweet corn, bush beans, lima beans, spring peas, leafy greens, summer squashes, tomatoes, Mexican oregano and rosemary. Getting an early start means vegetables will be ready prior to the withering heat of June. (Refer to Ten Steps to a Successful Vegetable Garden AZ 1435)https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/pubs/az1435-2015.pdf
🍃 March is the best time to plant new landscape plants. Warm soils and mild temperatures enable plants to establish themselves before hot weather sets in. (Refer to Plant Selection and Selecting Your Plants AZ 1153)https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/pubs/az1153-2015.pdf

Maintenance
🍃 Average last frost date is mid March.
🍃 Monitor new growth for aphids. Use a blast of water to discourage them or add one tablespoon of liquid dish detergent to one gallon of water and spray the top and bottom of leaves.
🍃 Prune winter damage after danger of freezing has passed. Examples are bougainvillea and lantana. Check the stems for signs of life. With a sharp knife, peel back some of the bark on the outer stems. If there is green sapwood underneath, do not prune these stems as new growth will soon appear. If, on the other hand, the wood beneath the bark is dry and brown, prune back to live wood. (Refer to Training and Pruning Newly Planted Deciduous Fruit Trees AZ 1668 and Pruning Citrus AZ 1455)https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/pubs/az1668-2015.pdfhttps://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/pubs/az1455.pdf
🍃 Thin fruit on deciduous fruit trees including apple, peach, plum, nectarine, and apricot to increase the size and quality. Leave about 6 inches between fruit. This is best done when the fruit is small--about marble-sized.

Watering
🍃 Check and adjust irrigation frequencies for March-May as per Arizona Department of Water Resources Guide.
