Start this new year by slowing down, listening to your body, and meditating on what you’d like to release and bring in.

As you explore the museum galleries, consider what senses are activated and how different artworks spark distinct responses and after, stop by the art-making tables to create calming neurographic art.

Participate in a semi-guided meditation session in the lower galleries with Serena Sahajian, a grief & loss care worker, two semi-guided sessions will be offered at 5:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. using work on view to reflect on release and renewal.

Kevin Red Star includes depictions of Indigenous people in his artworks. He stated, “Indigenous culture has in the past been ignored to a great extent. It is for me, as well as for many other Indigenous artists, a rich source of creative expression. An intertwining of my Indigenous culture with contemporary art expression has given me a greater insight concerning my art. I hope to accomplish something for the American Indian and at the same time achieve personal satisfaction in a creative statement through my art.”

On view in Enduring Legacies: The James T. Bialac Indigenous Art Collection. This program is made possible by Arizona Humanities.

Happy New Year! This year is extra special as we celebrate our Centennial. On March 20th, 1924, the leaders of the Arts Committee of the Tucson Woman’s Club, assembled a group of artists, art enthusiasts, and patrons who eagerly agreed to establish an art organization to benefit Tucson – and the Tucson Fine Arts Association became a reality. They could not have imagined that their nascent arts establishment would eventually become the oldest and largest cultural institution serving Southern Arizona – the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block (TMA).

Stay tuned as we look forward to presenting another spectacular season of special and collection-based exhibitions, events, and programs, in celebration of TMA’s first century of service to our community.

Tucson Museum Of Art presents Southwest Art: Contemporary Conversations ongoing. One of the primary objectives within the exhibition, Brindza says, are the ways in which the themes of land, materials, perspectives and identities overlap in each work of art. She cites Patssi Valdez’s 1992 lithograph The Cactus Queen, which “speaks to concepts related to identity, land and perspectives present in the Southwestern United States. Its depiction of saguaro cacti and the woman’s presence within this desert landscape may evoke thoughts about the various communities, histories and viewpoints that exist in this region.

I love Carmen's rich narrative visual stories. In this epic scene, you can feel the excitement of the night, all around are partygoers dressed to the nine, also evident, is the drama that comes with being young and in the nightlife culture. Drinking and music are raging inside, and outside the throwing of hands is going down for all to see!

Why are they fighting? I can't help but take a wild guess and say it's probably over matters of the heart or a betrayal.

This scenario strikes a chord because I’ve seen this play out firsthand, it highlights the fierce impassioned individuals that many Mexican families have. Looking more carefully, I see all the supporting roles: the worried friend not wanting a conflict, the other friend letting things play out, (maybe she was an instigator), the onlookers who are both concerned and entertained, the ones walking away not wanting to be dragged into anything, and of course, the dog, my favorite part, who looks more like a possessed rat that absolutely hates drama, it loudly objects and lives to rail against any kind of inhuman disruptive actions.

On view in the Sandra and Robert Maxfield Gallery.

Across the Americas, December 12 is the feast day honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe, who is celebrated for her miraculous appearance to the Indigenous Nahua man Juan Diego in 1531. More popular in the Americas than virtually any other Marian devotion, the Virgin of Guadalupe has been represented in innumerable prints, paintings, and sculpture created over centuries. This example from the TMA collection is a recently made image of the Virgin of Guadalupe by New Mexico-based artist Marco A. Oviedo, who creates religious images in wood following traditional techniques of the Southwest. You can see it now in the exhibition Southwest Art: Contemporary Conversations, on view in the Sandra and Robert Maxfield Gallery.

Pablita Velarde used a medium called earth pigments, where she developed colors from rocks and minerals and ground them to a fine powder. She said of the technique in an interview in 1993, "My grandma used to paint [the walls] with that gypsum...So I got my idea from there, or Dorothy Dunn [teacher at the Santa Fe Indian School] got the idea. Because we tried some earth pigment paintings when I was in school...But see, we called it earth painting because I guess we thought we were using something from the earth. And then we used some sand - just brown dirt from outside and reds from the La Bajada Hill."

At a time when most women artists did not receive attention for their work, Marjorie Reed made a unique contribution to the art of the American West genre. She became friends with a stagecoach driver and learned of the Butterfield Overland Mail Stage, which ran from San Francisco, CA to Yuma, AZ from 1857-1858. She traveled and sketched along the stagecoach route in the 1930S and 1940s; when she completed the series in 1957, her images were published in the Colorful Butterfield Overland Stage.
