As a final project for their "Race & Ethnicity" course, students were asked to form groups and create a podcast episode about the state of racial and ethnic politics in 2021. The episode could focus on any issue or policy area related to the content of the course.
At some point this semester, Dr. Bryant decided to add stakes, have a little fun, and announce that the podcast groups would compete for "Podcast Champion"...
This week, these nine podcast groups vied for, not only an 'A' on the assignment, but bragging rights. (Oh, and a glass championship mug, pictured below).
The winning podcast (selected by peer-evaluation) was "Collateral Damage" with an episode titled, "War on Drugs." Give it a listen here: https://anchor.fm/maria-manganiello/episodes/War-on-Drugs-euvs78/a-a58oc69
Congrats to Vanessa, Judson, and Maria (not pictured)!
And kudos to the rest of the class. Every group did an excellent job.

When asked to share what they learned from our screening of "Missing" (1982), one student wrote:
"This film taught me a lot about the Chilean coup of 1973 in general. While I have heard about it before in history classes, I have never seen it explored in depth. Missing gave me new insight into this event and the horror that the citizens of Chile experienced. Overall, I felt like Missing was a great introduction to the Chilean coup and I hope to learn more about the specifics of the event, perhaps in other history classes or even by myself."
Our expert guest Dr. Colin Snider school us on the history of coups in Latin America and how 60s, 70s, and 80s political destabilization in Central and South America has led to unintended consequences today.
Our next screening of "Man on Fire" will be held on Monday, April 12th at 6PM

When asked to share what they learned from our screening of "The Kids We Lose" (2018), one student wrote:
"I can not believe this happens in our society. I learned that we as a country need to do better for those children who are facing these [behavioral] difficulties. I work with autistic kids and after watching this film I want to do more. I want to help kids who are going through so much pain and help them in a way where they can feel normal again. We need to bring this topic to our society because changes need to happen and what is happening in these kids’ world is not right."
Our guest of honor Dr. Danielle Bailey shared a powerful personal story, as well as her expertise, and we're all the better for having learned from her. She's also provided a great post-viewing guide with explosive information on how children living with disabilities are being treated in our schools (which is in the comments section).
Our next screening of "Missing" will be held on Friday, March 26th @ 6PM.

The Kids We Lose
When asked to share what they learned from our screening of "Bedlam" (2019), one student wrote:
"This film made me extremely emotional. My family has a history of mental illness and it is horrific to know that there are so many untreated mentally ill out there, and even homeless. I myself did not realize that there were so many mentally ill individuals that are in prison who need better treatment. There is so much that we don’t know about those who do suffer from mental illness.
There are even times when people do not confront their illness until it's too late. This is even shown towards the beginning of the movie of a young girl with suicidal thoughts. That girl kept all of those thoughts inside and did not tell anyone until it got so bad she needed to be admitted to a hospital. This movie overall opened my eyes to those who need help and we didn't even know it, especially those in jail or on the streets."
We owe a debt to our guest of honor, associate professor Dr. Sarah Sass, for providing so many valuable insights and resources* for students on how to be an ally for those living with serious mental illnesses, as well as addressing their own struggles.
Our next screening of "The Kids We Lose" will be held on Thursday, February 25th @ 6PM.
