Lackawanna County Courthouse Square is home to the John Mitchell monument. Mitchell, dubbed โChampion of Labor, Defender of Human Rights,โ served as president of the United Mine Workers union during the 1902 Anthracite Strike and was successful in securing improved pay and better working conditions for miners. His actions made him a hero in coal country and the union dedicated a statue in Mitchell's honor in 1924. Here, a seldom-seen carving on the back of the monument's rotunda depicts a family scene, marking the importance of mining in the region and its impact on families.
