Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide and the leading cause of vision loss in the United States. It is estimated that 20.5 million Americans 40 years and older have cataract in one or both eyes.

Risk factors for developing cataracts include:
* having parents, brothers, sisters, or other family members who have cataracts
* having certain medical problems, such as diabetes
* having had an eye injury, eye surgery, or radiation treatments on your upper body
* having spent a lot of time in the sun, especially without sunglasses that protect your eyes from damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays
* using certain medications such as corticosteroids, which may cause early formation of cataracts.
* smoking

Here are some vision changes you may notice if you have a cataract:
* Having blurry vision
* Seeing double or a ghosted image out of the eye with cataract
* Being extra sensitive to light (especially with oncoming headlights at night)
* Having trouble seeing well at night, or needing more light when you read
* Seeing bright colors as faded or yellow instead

If you notice any of these cataract symptoms, make sure to talk to your eye doctor about your risk for cataract and steps you can take to keep your eyes healthy and your vision clear.

National Melanoma Day: What is Ocular Melanoma? (melanoma in or around the eye) is a type of cancer that develops in the cells that produce pigment. It occurs when the DNA of the pigment cells of the eye develop errors. These errors cause the cells to multiply out of control. The mutated cells collect in or on the eye and form a melanoma. In its early stages, ocular melanoma may not cause any symptoms. Because most melanomas develop in the part of the eye you cannot see, you may not know that you have a melanoma.

When ocular melanoma symptoms do occur, they can include:
* a dark spot on the iris or conjunctiva
* blurred or distorted vision or a blind spot in your side vision
* the sensation of flashing lights
* a change in the shape of the pupil

Certain factors increase your risk for developing melanoma. These include:
* exposure to natural sunlight or artificial sunlight (such as from tanning beds) over long periods of time may cause a melanoma on the surface of the eye (conjunctival melanoma)
* having light-colored eyes (blue or green eyes)
* older age
* Caucasian descent
* having certain inherited skin conditions, such as dysplastic nevus syndrome, which cause abnormal moles
* having abnormal skin pigmentation involving the eyelids and increased pigmentation on the uvea; and
* having a mole in the eye or on the eye's surface

Because most eye melanomas form in the part of the eye you can’t see when looking in a mirror, they can be difficult to detect. Prioritize your eye health and schedule a dilated eye examination with your eye doctor today!

February is Age-related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month (AMD)
Macular Degeneration is an eye disease affecting the macula causing loss of central vision. You cannot see fine details, whether you are looking at something close or far. But your peripheral (side) vision will still be normal.

Who is at risk for AMD?
You are more likely to develop AMD if you:
🔸eat a diet high in saturated fat (found in foods like meat, butter, and cheese)
🔸are overweight
🔸smoke ci******es
🔸are over 50 years old
🔸have hypertension (high blood pressure)
🔸have a family history of AMD

In its early stages, signs of AMD can go unnoticed such as dark or empty area in the center of vision, straight lines look wavy or crooked, shapes of objects appear distorted.

If you are experiencing any of the above signs or symptoms schedule a comprehensive eye exam immediately by calling ☎️614.739.0660 or schedule online at 💻 www.horvathvisionnorthwoods.com

January is !
Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss and blindness in the United States.
Glaucoma has no early symptoms — that’s why half of people with glaucoma don’t know they have it. The only way to check for glaucoma is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam. There’s no cure for glaucoma, but early treatment can often stop it from damaging people’s vision.

Schedule a comprehensive dilated eye exam to protect your sight. Call us at 614.721.4002 or schedule online @ www.horvathvisionlane.com

November is - Early diabetic eye diseases are painless and commonly has no warning signs. Patients are frequently unaware that they have the condition, and the longer a person has diabetes, the greater the risk of sight-threatening diabetic eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataracts.

An annual, comprehensive dilated eye examination is the most effective way to detect the earliest signs of diabetes. We encourage those with diabetes to take proactive steps to protect their vision. Schedule your yearly dilated eye exam at www.horvathvisionlane.com or call 614.721.4002.
