Five years ago, a group of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign grad students started something incredible in their ASTRO 596 class.

Today, that project has evolved into DeepDISC—an NCSA-supported, AI-powered tool revolutionizing how we identify stars & galaxies in telescope images.

Take a look at the comparison below of the untouched image (left) and the image showing the objects detected by DeepDISC (right). Green boxes indicate that DeepDISC thinks the object is a galaxy & red boxes indicate that DeepDISC thinks the object is a star. Cool, right?

Led by Prof. Xin Liu & grad student Grant Merz, is paving the way for breakthroughs in astronomical research, with future applications in & environmental science.
