More about Amie Whittemore (she/her): A creative writing professor at Eastern Illinois University, she is the author of three poetry collections, including Nest of Matches (Autumn House Press). She was the 2020–2021 Poet Laureate of Murfreesboro, Tennessee & a The Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow. Her poems have won multiple awards, including a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Prize, and her poems & prose have appeared in The Gettysburg Review, Nashville Review, Smartish Pace, Pleiades & elsewhere.

Five years ago, a group of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign grad students started something incredible in their ASTRO 596 class.
Today, that project has evolved into DeepDISC—an NCSA-supported, AI-powered tool revolutionizing how we identify stars & galaxies in telescope images.
Take a look at the comparison below of the untouched image (left) and the image showing the objects detected by DeepDISC (right). Green boxes indicate that DeepDISC thinks the object is a galaxy & red boxes indicate that DeepDISC thinks the object is a star. Cool, right?
Led by Prof. Xin Liu & grad student Grant Merz, is paving the way for breakthroughs in astronomical research, with future applications in & environmental science.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign—with support from the Provost, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation (OVCRI) & —is proud to announce the establishment of the Office of Data Science Research (ODSR).
This new office is set to transform the landscape of data science research on campus by fostering connections, enhancing communication & aligning research opportunities.
Building on the successes of the Midwest Big Data Innovation Hub (MBDH), ODSR will act as a coordination platform, helping researchers find synergies, start new projects & connect with external stakeholders. John MacMullen, MBDH Executive Director, & Bill Gropp, NCSA Director, will lead the initial efforts & strategic planning for ODSR.
As a member of the Academic Data Science Alliance (ADSA), ODSR will represent , expanding our engagement with leaders and offering a vital resource for faculty, staff, postdocs & students, supporting their research efforts & amplifying their impact.

Dr. Kartik Sheth from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration delivered an impactful talk on the importance of inclusion in science, reminding us that diverse perspectives drive innovation. Prof. Abigail Vieregg from The University of Chicago captivated the audience with her public lecture, “Observing the Beginning of the Universe,” offering a glimpse into the mysteries of our cosmos.

This summer, the Center for Digital Agriculture (CDA) hosted its largest cohort yet for its REU program, tripling the number of students from last year! These 22 bright minds from across the country dove into real-world research, gaining hands-on experience in digital agriculture, AI & more.
Whether identifying respiratory illness in pigs, helping robots navigate fields, or using AI to fight weeds, these students pushed the boundaries of what technology can do in agriculture.
