A new funding program under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) has added additional funding for MPO’s to help reduce carbon emissions. These funds must be displayed in the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and States and MPOs are required to jointly develop quantifiable transportation projects to help achieve carbon reduction regulations promulgated by the Federal Highway and Transit Administrations.
Projects within the TIP will help increase the efficiency and safety of the transportation network in the Valdosta-Lowndes Metropolitan Planning Area, which includes all of Lowndes County and portions of Berrien, Brooks and Lanier Counties.

The latest version of the Georgia 3-Feet Bike Passing Law took effect on July 1, 2022. Bicycles are legally considered vehicles and must obey all traffic laws in Georgia including signaling, obeying traffic control devices, hands off phones, etc. This also means that motorized vehicles must respect bicyclists as vehicles including safe passing space. When a motorized vehicle needs to pass a bicyclist, the first course of action is to pull over into the available passing lane and pass as normal. If no passing lane is available then reduce speed to ten miles less than the posted limit or 25 mph, whichever is greater, and proceed around the bicyclist with at least three feet between such vehicle and the bicycle at all times. Remember, nothing you have to do is more important than someone else's life!
The Southern Georgia Regional Commission's Complete Streets Best Practices for Rural Areas shows different types of complete street options (like this rural highway in Brooks County) for communities throughout south Georgia. https://conta.cc/3OLgGsM
What are complete streets and what are the benefits?
They are designed and operated to prioritize safety, comfort, and access to destinations for all people. Complete streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, jobs, and schools.

What does a complete street look like?
In order to determine the most appropriate complete streets approach, first identify the characteristics and concerns of each potential user: bicyclists, pedestrians, transit riders, and other roadway users.
Oftentimes, a road only needs a sidewalk or wide shoulder to accommodate the needs of pedestrian and bicyclists. What facilities will best “complete” a street dependent upon the surrounding land uses (downtown, commercial corridor, residential neighborhood, rural area).
