Humphreys, director of the Selig Center for Economic Growth, recently reported that Valdosta State University’s total economic impact on our region—Lowndes, Brooks, Lanier, Berrien, Cook, and Echols counties—reached an impressive $394.6 million between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023! 🙌

This includes creating 3,691 jobs, with 2,415 jobs off campus in the public and private sectors. VSU continues to be a driving force for economic growth and opportunity in South Georgia!

Local and state leaders joined Governor Brian Kemp and Lt. Gov. Burt Jones to celebrate the groundbreaking of a second furnace at the Arglass facility on its Valdosta, Georgia campus. The $230 million expansion will produce up to eight glass container types simultaneously for maximum flexibility, enabling small production runs, faster action to market demands, lower inventory levels, and reduced investment in molds.

Construction is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2025. Once operational, the facility will produce more than 350 million sustainable glass containers annually, helping pave the way for a greener, more eco-friendly tomorrow. The state-of-the-art manufacturing facility will embody the future of glass manufacturing with a fully integrated production network driven by AI-integrated real-time data monitoring, predictive modeling, and fully automated closed-loop production and quality assurance systems.

We're thrilled to have hosted our third 𝐖𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 program, a collaborative effort with Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. This five-day intensive training program provided seniors from Valdosta and Lowndes high schools with essential industry skills and certifications.

🔧Students honed their skills and earned certificates in Forklift Safety and OSHA 10-hour General Industry Certification. But that's not all --they also received valuable insights into various industrial programs during a tour of Wiregrass Tech.

🤝💼 In addition, students engaged in mock interviews with local companies, including Cargill, Packaging Corporation of America, Sunset Farm Foods, and GAF. They also received guidance in writing their resumes.

🍽️👩‍🏭 Thanks to the generous sponsorship from Cargill, Langdale Industries, Packaging Corporation of America, and ACE Electric, our students had the opportunity to connect with industry professionals during lunch sessions. These interactions foster valuable networking and provide useful insights into local manufacturing careers.

Site Selection has named Valdosta-Lowndes County a Tier-3 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝟏𝟎 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨 area based on the number of significant economic development projects. Tier 3 represents communities with populations of less than 200,000.

In 2023, the Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority worked on projects that added 460 jobs and injected $390 million in capital investments into the local and regional economy, including Walmart's announcement to build a dairy processing facility.

Valdosta also welcomed Prinsco, a national company that manufactures corrugated high-density polyethylene and polypropylene pipes. The 74,000-square-foot facility will be completed later this year, and the company expects to create 40 jobs.

Along with recruiting businesses, the Development Authority worked with existing industries on facility expansion, installation of advanced machinery, and solutions to increase storage and production capacity.

𝐄𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐧

On February 8, the 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 (𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐓) hosted a luncheon highlighting Valdosta State University partnerships with regional industries, businesses, nonprofits, and government entities to provide training and resources.

𝐃𝐫. 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞-𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲, dean of the College of Mathematics, discussed how VSU provides Lean Six Sigma training to local industries and businesses. He also highlighted ways the VSU Center for South Georgia Regional Impact connects community leaders with faculty, staff, and students to identify issues and develop solutions.

𝐃𝐫. 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐞𝐫, the Director of VSU STEAM Center for Applied Creativity and Innovation, encouraged businesses to connect with future workers by participating in the 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐨 𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟖, 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟗 𝐚.𝐦. 𝐭𝐨 𝟐 𝐩.𝐦. 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐒𝐔 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐌 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫, 1302 North Patterson Street, Valdosta. The expo will provide over 500 middle and high school students with an opportunity to explore STEM careers in South Georgia.

The luncheon was hosted by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority and VSU's Center for South Georgia Regional Impact.
