Back at Lake Dalwigk again. Rain is a matter of survival for people, plants and wildlife. With it can come the flushing of storm drains, just a situation we have to deal with the best we can. We appreciate all those who come out for any opportunity we might be able to provide. Sat was an opportunity to reduce the negative impacts of "trash". Kudo's to Mark and Sophia, Tim and Trent, Robin, Steve, Kassie, Laurie and Tom, Xareni and Josseline, Liz, Jennifer and and your truly, the photographer.
Sat, Jan 19, 2019, the VWA and Solano Resource Conservation District supported restoration efforts at Lake Dalwigk. VWA volunteers provided trash removal and restoration support.

So it is always a pleasure to host an organization that is willing to "Pitch in" ! On this day, Cal Maritime was that group! Tulle removal is no easy task. These Cadets buckled up and got it done.
Recology, Coastal Cleanup Day, 2016. Often, when the VWA is doing a cleanup in our watershed, Recology Vallejo is providing assistance. Coastal Cleanup Day depends heavily on Recology every year. A BIG Thank you to Recology Vallejo for your continued support of Vallejo's Watershed!
Coastal Cleanup, 2016, Vallejo, Rindler Creek. Liz is seen here sporting green waders while wrestling a shopping cart out of Rindler Creek. Being the sport that she is, she was spotted wrangling tires out of the creek also. Unfortunately, people feel the need to toss these items into the creek:( Next cleanup will be May of 2017, looking forward to MIT in May!!!!
Tomorrow is Coastal Cleanup Day!!!!

VWA hosts at Rindler Creek for its September workday. As usual, MIT Academy is out in force to support this clean-up! There was a nasty dumping in the creek, one of the Teachers put on the waders provided and went to work. The plan was to get the debris removed from the creek so the city or someone else could remove all that trash. Recology came by and picked up what MIT pulled out of the creek, garbage cans, carpet, shoes clothes and more:( All in all, a great clean up at Rindler! TY to MIT for supporting the Environment!
Its September again! We could all use a little "pick me up" now and then. That certainly applies to our Watersheds and Waterways. In case you may have a favorite location outside of Vallejo, you can find the contact info here. Here in Vallejo there are over 15 sites to choose from.
Over the past several years, the Vallejo Watershed Alliance has hosted a series of presentations on restoration and water issues. This August, we are delighted to welcome Steve Dunsky and Miranda Hutten from the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). Miranda is the Urban and Community Forestry Program Manager at the USFS, and will talk about how the Service connects to our community through restoration projects and creek cleanups, and the importance of trees to maintain a healthy city. Steve is a producer and director of films and videos at the USFS, known for such groundbreaking films as Green Fire, The Greatest Good, and Butterflies and Bulldozers. He is also the mastermind behind Visions of the Wild, a unique celebration of wilderness on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Wilderness Act. Steve will talk about Visions of the Wild H20, a celebration of water and watersheds, coming this October.
The USFS presentation will take place on Saturday, August 29 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Dan Foley Cultural Center/Vista Room. After 10 a.m., Alliance members will calendar events for the next twelve months. Members of the public are invited to come for the presentation or the entire meeting. All are invited; refreshments and parking are free. Please RSVP to [email protected] or call, 707-654-1943

Bay Area Skate Clubs Clean up Local Creek for Earth Day
A collaborative of skateboarding clubs from all over the Bay Area joined community volunteers to convene in Vallejo's Blue Rock Springs Corridor on Saturday for their 2nd annual Earth Day Clean Up Skate Jam. The event was sponsored by Solano County, the Vallejo Watershed Alliance, Vallejo Sanitation and Flood Control District, Recology Vallejo and professional skateboarder Karl Watson of Organika Skateboards (see photo). Over 50 volunteers waded through the tules and brush along Blue Rock Springs Creek to remove 700 pounds of trash and recyclables, improving water quality and wildlife habitat in this unique urban corridor. When asked where he finds the time and motivation to help bring youth out to clean-up events such as this, Watson noted that "We are all one. The earth is alive, we are alive, when we clean up the earth, we clean up ourselves."
The VWA will celebrate Earth Day again this year by joining forces County-wide for a large clean up event in the Hann's Park/Blue Rock Springs Creek Corridor. We are targeting the entire corridor. Staging/meeting area is across from the Skate Park/Dog Park, along the creek. See you on the 25th !!!
Preparing for the April Youth Fishing Events at Lake Chabot, shoreline access is required. It is a Wet, Rocky and Muddy job, but it has to be done! Many Thanks to Touro University Volunteers, the wader crew and our great community at large for pitching in and making this happen!!!
In preparation for the April Youth Fishing Events, The VWA will help prepare the Chabot shoreline. The shoreline is wet, rocky and muddy, be prepared for those conditions. Bring your own clippers and loppers if you have them. See you there!!
Part 2 of some recent restoration efforts taking place in the Hanns Park/Blue Rock Springs Creek Corridor. We had Cal Maritime, MIT and others out to pitch in on Restoration!!!
Jan 17th The Solano Resources Conservation District in joint effort with the Vallejo Watershed Alliance held its first of 2 restoration days. The next workday is February 21st. On Sat they planted about 1700 grass plugs. The RCD is half way through a 4 year restoration effort in this corridor. The removal of the Himalayan Blackberries in this section is just one of many components to the work the SRCD has been doing in this corridor.
RCD Workday, Jan 17 and Feb 21, 2015
The VWA and RCD invite YOU, the Community to come out and join us for 2 special Restoration Days. Jan 17th and Feb 21st. There is a section of Blue Rock Springs Creek that has been freed from the Blackberries!! You are being invited to come out and join us as we introduce native plants, grasses and trees to this area. We hope to see you there!!!
Photos from our November workday. We redistributed bark along the path in the Meadow. This path was created for the Watershed Explorers Program. Also can be used by the general public.
We worked on the path that we created last year. We pulled, hoed, chopped and raked w**d that had invaded our path. Next month we will be spreading more bark along the path, in preparation for the invasion of 3rd graders, AKA, Watershed Explorers! Hope to see you in November!!
Although this is a work day, this is also our Annual BBQ, for Alliance Volunteers! Come on down, have a dog or a burger and visit for a while! Hope to see you there!
VWA had a table at Farmers Market for Earth Day. A Quiz table. Testing your brain and expanding your knowledge. An interactive contribution to the Earth on this day.
VWA 2014, Earth Day, Creek Clean-up. About 55 Skate boarders decided to find common ground, to get involved in their community. They picked up about 50 bags of trash in a 90 minute period. It was a planned exercise to teach them how they can make a positive impact in their community, to show the public as well that is more to a Skate boarder than might meet the eye, never judge a person by their Board:) It was a pleasure to host this eager group of young men and a few gals!
