I did a photo shoot of my Brookdale Ladies by the pretty cherry blossoms outside of the shop on the patio after I did their hair. They really enjoyed that. I will print them out for them to have.

Framing Vallejo in a positive light

Vallejo native uses hair salon, photography skills to highlight hometown
By Sarah Rohrs
Special to the Times-Herald

Elizabeth Bell couldn’t be more grateful for DedeScrivner DsmobileCuts DsmobilePhotography regular hair care gives the housebound Vallejoan a much-needed lift in her morale.

As the owner of D’s Mobile Cuts, Scrivner’s aim is to help Vallejo residents like Bell, and also put a polish on the city’s image.

Besides her mobile hair care business, Scrivner also has a portable trailer to take to community functions where she gives free hair cuts to homeless people.

In addition, she is using her photography skills to curate a show called “UNIQUE TO VALLEJO” highlighting eight themes unique to the city.

“I’m trying to educate the community about all the community about all the new things taking place here in Vallejo and all the great things Vallejo has to offer,” she said.

The new developments in the city Scrivner is particularly excited about include art renaissance in the downtown, and the weekly Saturday morning coffee events at Moschetti’s.

Her business, D’s Mobile Cuts, came about after she left her work at local salons and decided to open her own business combining her hair skills with desire to help people.

For nearly 25 years, Scrivner worked in local salons, and managed a Vallejo Supercuts.

Her work includes going to the homes of seniors, board and care homes, and assisted living facilities to give hair care to those who face big challenges getting out.

Besides hair cuts, she does permanents, hair colors, washes and sets, and brings along a portable sink that can be used easily to wet and rinse hair.

Her clients include seniors, and those with disabilities Bell is just one of many.

“I love it. It’s more than convenient for me. It’s a morale builder,” said Bell who ran her own tax business in Vallejo for many years but is now confined to a wheelchair.

“My hair always looks good after DeDe is done with it,” she said.

The service is particularly welcome as Bell faces enormous challenges getting around. She said SolTrans does not provide enough bus transportation on the south side of Vallejo, and taxi cabs are prohibitively expensive.

Scrivner said she enjoys working on her own, and helping clients who need inhome visits. Her volunteer work takes place inside her mobile hair salon she can transport to community functions.

On the second Saturday she takes her trailer to the JFK Library parking lot to cut hair for free. There Vallejo Together helps homeless people from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Most recently, she brought her trailer to an outreach event at Vallejo City Park and gave free hair cuts.

She’s also brought her trailer and provided services at Relay for Life, Fourth of July and other community events.

It’s all about wanting to help, she said.

“I can’t give money but I can give my time,” she said.

“It’s very rewarding. I get a lot of enjoyment out of it,” she added.

Scrivner has done much of the work herself on her mobile unit which was at one time a trailer for selling cotton candy.

She refurbished it and outfitted it with a chair, and a regular car battery that can be replenished through electricity off her house.

Photography is another separate business she runs where she takes pictures at weddings, and makes her scenic landscape shots available for sale.

For months, she’s been working on the UNIQUE TO VALLEJO curated photo show which will be shown at the Artiszen Cultural Arts Center, 337 Georgia St., in downtown Vallejo.

The show will highlight eight themes of areas that are unique to the city — restaurants, shops, scenery, community gatherings, programs, education, arts and entertainment and historic homes and building.

Scrivner said it’s an opportunity to showcase some of Vallejo’s gems and promote the city in a positive light.

Further, the show is also meant to promote Artiszen Cultural Arts Center (fees to submit photos will support the center) and bring people to the downtown which is undergoing transformation with art galleries and shops.

A Vallejo native, Scrivner said she is excited about recent developments that have brought in new people and energy to Vallejo.

Her aim is to help promote events and businesses so that they get enough patronage and stay in business.

About a year ago, Scrivner said she began to notice something was afoot, particularly in the downtown with the Art Windows projects, and advent of the Vallejo Admirals baseball team and local games.

“If these places don’t get people to go to them they will go away. I’ve waited all my life for some of these things to come here,” she added.

Artiszen Cultural Arts Center founder Sean Gutierrez said Scrivner’s energy is refreshing, and welcome.

“She’s doing her share to make a difference. She’s a community-builder. She’s one of those people who are building the community with her own time,” he added.
