Happy TWO-year work anniversary Jon! It’s hard to imagine our team without you. The knowledge and care you bring to each interaction have been deeply impactful across the firm. Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and positive attitude that you bring to our workplace.

It has now been over a year since the Washington Supreme Court upheld a law instituting a 7% tax on capital gains (i.e. profits) from the sale of assets (with some exceptions) exceeding $250,000.

Fast forward and Washington’s new capital gains tax has brought in nearly $900 million in its first year (2023), according to the Washington Department of Revenue. The first $500 million of the tax is directed toward a state fund that pays for K-12 education and child-care programs. The additional dollars are then expected to go into a state account that pays for school construction.

Fast forward again and a measure (I-2109) has been placed on the November 2024 ballot for Washington voters giving them the opportunity to repeal the capital gains tax.

It’s been an interesting endeavor up to this point and it would appear the journey has more in store. We will await the outcome in November and update accordingly.

There is a deep need for a firm whose focus is on serving the best interest of their clients.

The coming months will be inundated with campaign rhetoric aimed at stirring emotions to illicit action at polling booths. The Fed Maintains Cruise Control

Coming into 2024, investors were anticipating the Federal Reserve to lower rates anywhere between 0.75% and 1.50%. While the inflation challenge persists, a strong economic undercurrent coupled with a healthy labor market has the market quickly downshifting these expectations. Against this backdrop, we’ve seen the yield on the 10-year treasury increase from nearly 3.90% to begin the year to over 4.60% recently. This sharp rise in interest rates has put notable pricing pressure on investment markets. Additionally, this increase in yields has pushed 30-year mortgage rates above the critical threshold of 7.0%. While the Fed did hold rates unchanged at their most recent meeting, they did scale back the pace at which it is shrinking its balance sheet. The Fed has a tight grip on the overarching market narrative, and they have shown a proclivity to wield it wisely to the benefit of patient investors.
