“I was nervous about returning to school at the age of forty and a single mom,” recalls Summyr Levitoff. “After making the decision that nothing was going to stop me from fulfilling my dream, I became ineligible for federal grants,” she recalls. Enter the Ventura College Foundation.
Eligible for scholarships through Ventura College Foundation, Summyr was awarded 3, allowing her to continue her education while also having time to care for her children. As she works toward her goal of becoming an oceanographer and marine biologist, “the money allows me to focus on class and not just survival,” says Summyr. “The scholarship lets me know that people in the community care about other people—and that is nothing short of a life-altering feeling! It’s so much easier to enjoy learning when you’re not afraid of rejection or financial instability.”
Summyr eagerly expresses gratitude for the donors who form the lifeblood of the Foundation and its financial scholarship and program assistance. "To the donors, I say thank you for making a difference in my and my family's life. Thank you for your generosity and tangible display of compassion. Please don't stop giving. Don't stop changing lives and making the world a better place. My life has been enriched by the generous donors who choose to contribute."

Recent graduate, Gabriel Fajardo is a dedicated and passionate young man whose hard work and natural academic acumen were greatly enhanced by the added confidence and support of The Ventura College Foundation.
“My experience at Ventura College has been incredible, to say the least,” explains Gabriel, who has excelled in the school’s Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) Program. “I have encountered the most dedicated and compassionate professors here, and my engineering and physics professors have particularly inspired me to be the best student I can be by modeling their passion and love for their work.”
Gabriel received the Gene Haas Scholarship in 2022, the Gerald R. Curtis Engineering Scholarship, and the Hofflund Family Phoenix Scholarship in 2023. These scholarships helped him believe and from there, everything fell into place nicely.
"I want to tell the Foundation donors, thank you for believing in me and supporting my goals and aspirations,” says Gabriel. “Last year, I sold myself short by thinking that I would not be accepted to top universities in California. I’m proud to say now that I’ve been accepted to some of the best universities in the state—and I’m more excited than ever for the next step in my educational journey. Your donations motivated and inspired me to work harder. And doors have opened for me that I never thought would open."

Diego Salas has a crystal-clear vision of where he is headed in the future as he blazes bold new trails for his community. He received the VC Promise and four impactful VC Foundation scholarships during his time at Ventura College where he graduated in May 2023. He is attending CSU Channel Islands where he plans to get his bachelor's degree in history before pursuing his master's degree in US history.
Diego knows he wouldn’t have been able to move confidently forward into that bright future without the support of Ventura College Foundation and their giving donors. He hopes other current and future Ventura College students also reach out if they’re in need of assistance.
“I would say to my fellow students, know that there are people who want to reach out to you in more ways than one, and all you have to do is to reach out back to them,” explains Diego. “By phone, email, or in writing. They’re always there. You just have to reach out to them and communicate with them.”

Isabel Tenison, a now student at the University of California at Santa Barbara, has nothing but positive things to say about her experience academically and athletically at Ventura College. 🏊♀️📚
While at Ventura College Isabel received the Bill Miller Memorial Scholarship and the Miriam Schwan Memorial Aquatics Scholarship. She competed on the women's water polo team and played a pivotal role on a team that posted a sparkling 20-7 record during the 2021-2022 season.
“The Ventura College Foundation’s support helped me to further my academic career by recognizing my passion for water polo and academics—and rewarding me with scholarships,” states Isabel. “This helped to lift the burden of expenses at my four-year university and allowed me to not stress on paying for college, but instead turn my focus to shaping my college experience.”

With a heavy heart, we share the news that the VC Foundation's Former Board Member and donor, Stephen J. Kipp, passed away on March 15, 2024.
Stephen was well known for his exceptional generosity, huge heart, his positivity, master problem solving skills, and incredible sense of humor. He was highly respected, admired, and inspiring to those around him, and will be greatly missed by those who knew him well.
Stephen’s passion was giving back to his Ventura County community. He served on numerous Boards of Directors and provided financial support to the Ventura College Foundation, Ventura County Museum, Ventura & Ojai Rotary Clubs, Rubicon Theater, Ventura Music Festival, New West Symphony, Salvation Army-Ventura, Ventura Education Partnership, Boys & Girls Club-Ventura, Canine Adoption & Rescue League, Focus on the Masters, San Buenaventura Foundation for the Arts, Bell Arts Factory, Ventura Botanical Gardens, Ventura Water Polo Club, and more.
Stephen was also an adjunct professor at Ventura College for 10 years, teaching night classes in financial education. It was in this capacity that he developed a deep appreciation for the opportunities offered at the college and the Foundation to help students achieve their goals.
“My years of teaching gave me first-hand experience with students who were motivated to further their careers to make a better life for themselves and their loved ones, often juggling work, family, and classes to make that happen,” said Stephen in 2019. “I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve on the Foundation board and help these dedicated students pursue a college education.”
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice or those dear to Stephen’s heart. To give to the VC Foundation, visit https://venturacollegefoundation.org/donate/ or Text: Give2VC To: 91999, select, "Stephen Kipp Memorial".
