Why should YOU, someone who has no history of addiction, carry Narcan?

• For the teenage girl, who was experimenting at the party. Whose friends drug her out of the car and left her in your front yard.

• For your best friend’s brother – who they love unconditionally, no matter how many times he’s been to rehab.

Hello. My name is Terri. I’m both a Licensed Paramedic and a Juvenile Probation Officer in the State of Texas. Im also the aunt to Zackery and the younger sister to the creator of this page. As we approach the 3rd year anniversary of losing Zack, I wanted to share some thoughts with you.

As a juvenile probation officer, unfortunately I see so many kids using substances to cope with mental health challenges and other hardships. I also see an alarming number of kids using THC vapes. The juvenile system is overran with these kind of cases. We don’t have enough resources to combat the issue. Many will say that it’s just ma*****na and it should be legal even for juveniles. I’m not here to argue that argument today. I here to tell you most juveniles I have seen who are on more significant drugs are also using THC. For those who venture into harder drugs, there isn’t a centralized lab that holds drug dealers accountable to a standard. There’s no quality assurance to make sure the amount in a specific drug is the same today as it was yesterday or that it’s not laced with something else. One pill may do nothing today but ONE PILL KILLS tomorrow.

This is where my second job comes in. As a paramedic, I understand the importance of Narcan and the need for it to be administered rather quickly. I have responded to an unresponsive person, started CPR, bagged and got to the point of intubating when the 4th round of Narcan finally was able to overcome the opioids in the person system. That person stood up and walked out the door to the ambulance. I’m not saying Narcan is a miracle drug that fixes all problems. It doesn’t. I’ve also been on scenes where Narcan wasn’t administered early enough and the person was dead with no hopes of bringing them back. And of course, Narcan wasn’t administered at all to my nephew and on this page, we all know how that ended. RIP sweet boy. But with that said Narcan, when used in the right time and circumstance, can and will save lives.

Let’s talk about how Narcan works. Narcan is a reversal agent for a specific set of drugs know as opioids (Fentanyl, Morphine, Codeine, Oxycodone, etc). When used, these drugs prevent you from breathing. Basically- they make you forget to breathe and you suffocate. Narcan opens the pathway that tells you to breathe. The important part of getting Narcan to reverse the problem is that it has to be done rather quickly. The brain starts to die within about 4 minutes of no oxygen and the heart shortly after. Within 10 minutes of those two organs not receiving oxygen the odds of bringing a person back are very little. This is why it is important for Narcan to be given as quickly as possible.

Narcan is simple to use. For non-healthcare providers, it’s used like nose spray and sprayed directly into the nose using a device that’s like a nose spray bottle. Once administered the Narcan works to reverse the effects of opioids within minutes. The person can go from not breathing and pulseless to standing up talking within 3 minutes IF GIVEN within an appropriate time and the right amount (enough given).

Signs of an opioid overdose:
Pinpoint pupils (the black of the eye is very small)
Respiratory depression- difficulty breathing or not breathing or shallow breathing
Confusion
Loss of consciousness

In cases of opioid overdose:
If they are breathing, give Narcan then call 911.

If they aren’t breathing/ have no pulse- call 911, do hands only CPR and give Narcan.

You can NOT overdose on Narcan so do not worry about giving to much Narcan. If you know it’s a opioid overdose use all the narcan it takes to overcome the overdose. This means until they are breathing again.

Calling 911 is extremely important because the Narcan will wear off faster then the opioids. They needs to go to the hospital to have additional treatment. Narcan is just a temporary solution until you can get further medical treatment.

I say all of this in hopes that you never have to experience the pain that our family has. If you know someone who is addicted to opioids, please try to get them help. If you know someone who is experimenting with any substance, please get them help.

Thanks to Venus Beyond Boundaries and other non-profit organizations, Narcan is provided for free to anyone who wants to carry it. There’s no harm in carrying Narcan with you. Even if you don’t know someone who is actively using, you may come across someone in the public- at the grocery store/park- who needs it. You never forget the time you saved someone and you never forget the time you couldn’t.
