John Miller references several different car companies and styles, including Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Chrysler–three American automobile manufacturers with noteworthy histories in the industry and a legacy of producing "Classic American" cars. Oldsmobile was particularly known for innovations like the rocket V8 engine, an advancement referenced in the title of Miller's installation piece. The wing motif in Miller's work is a nod to Chrysler's Winged Goddess and similar designs from that era, where wings symbolized speed and alluded in innovation and streamlined design.

👻 Happy Halloween from VBMA! 🎃
VBMA’s permanent collection features two works by German painter and printmaker Werner Drewes (1899-1985), who emigrated to the United States in 1930. This work, 'Halloween', created towards the end of the artist’s life, is characteristic of the pieces he made throughout his artistic career, as it bears influences of Cubism and the Bauhaus—a German school of art, architecture, and design founded in 1919 that focused on functional design and sought to integrate artistic principles into everyday life. For example, the vertical “stacking” of shapes against sections of color echoes the Bauhaus. Some of the titles of his abstract works reference emotions, places, and objects, while others refer to seasons or weather. Here, Drewes presents an interplay of orange, marigold, olive, and black colors that may remind viewers of the fall season and of Halloween.
🎨 Werner Drewes, Halloween, 1981. Color woodcut on Hocho Japanese paper, 19 ¼ x 14 7/8 inches. Gift of Dr. Robert B. and Dorothy M. Gronlund.
