We’re only two weeks out from hosting Dr. Léon van Ommen here on Baylor’s campus! If you haven’t already, mark your calendar for whichever talk you can attend. Thursday is an academic lecture for students, faculty, and staff— no rsvp needed. However Friday’s talk is more for the community of Waco including pastors, worship leaders, autistic individuals and anyone else that’s interested in what Dr. van Ommen has to share! Friday’s talk does require registration so please fill out the link in our bio to sign up!
Worship is at the heart of the life of the church. Pastors, worship leaders, and church members care deeply about fostering environments of welcome and hospitality. Yet, even the most caring churches encounter barriers to facilitating worship service in which all experience a sense of belonging.
A recent book by Dr. Léon van Ommen, Senior Lecturer in Practical Theology at the University of Aberdeen, addresses a population often experiencing such barriers in the church: autistic people and their families. Research has shown that autistic and non-autistic people experience the world differently. Both autistic and non-autistic people have much to contribute to the body of Christ. How might leaders design worship and church practices in light of these differences?
Open to all, this community talk, Reconsidering Worship and Church through the Lens of Autism, will analyze the Church through the lens of autism and reconsider the Church’s corporate worship practices. A special Q&A will follow with Dr. van Ommen.
Pastors, worship leaders, children/youth ministry leaders, church volunteers, and all interested in learning more about autism and the church will not want to miss this special event taking place as part of the Baylor Center for Developmental Disabilities’ 10th anniversary celebration.
Event Details: Friday, Feb. 23rd from 9:00-10:30am at Truett Seminary in the Great Hall. Coffee and pastries provided! Parking is free at the Hurd Center or Dutton Garage. RSVP: https://forms.office.com/r/66PNveJ1RB
