Congratulations to Waipahu’s Hazel B, whose amazing artwork has won third place in the senior division of the Hawai‘i Academy of Science's STEM Poster contest. The entrants were displayed at the Hawai‘i State Science & Engineering Fair, and attendees were invited to place their vote for the best in each division. This year’s theme was mathematics; Hazel says she was inspired by math in nature, such as the Fibonacci sequence in the nautilus shell and chameleon tail. Beautiful!

It has been BUSY at our Waipahu middle school today. Students kicked off the day with their showcases on campus — what an awesome display! And then it was off to Waipahu Uka park for the annual walkathon. Stay tuned for more on this, including how much students raised for their two chosen organizations: Maui Strong Fund and Fight Strong.

Any elephants in need of toothpaste? Our Kīhei students have some handy. For this Grade 9 STEM activity, they combined hydrogen peroxide and yeast. The hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen. The oxygen wants to escape, but the dish soap traps the gas bubbles and forms a foam, aka elephant toothpaste!

Kaylan Haywood would have graduated from HTA this year. Kaylan lost her battle with brain cancer in 2018, but her family remembers her as the loving person and the fighter she was. She is missed by her HTA ‘ohana and we will be celebrating her during our graduation ceremonies.

Her mom, Michela, honors Kaylan through the non-profit foundation that she started to raise awareness and to support other ‘ohanas.

This Saturday is Kaylan’s Warrior Fun Run at Kapapapuhi Point on O‘ahu. There is a second event on May 26 at Old Airport, Kailua-Kona on Hawai‘i Island. You can also participate virtually and donate. Go to https://www.kaylanstrongsfightlikeawarriorfoundation.org/ to learn how our HTA ‘ohana can celebrate our very special alumna.
