How to give your baby a nasal saline wash.
When your baby has a cold and a lot of mucus in their nose, it can be helpful to help clear it out with a saline wash. There are various ways to do this and products that assist with it. I personally rarely actually suction out the mucus. Instead, I spray saline up each nose. As it mixes with the mucus, the thick mucus will become more watery a drip out or they will sneeze it out and I’ll wipe it away. This avoids potential trauma from putting the suction up their nose and trying to suction the mucus out multiple times.
Baby Kaitlyn is 8 months in this video. She has a little cold and woke up from her nap with dried/crusted secretions on the outside of her nose, and thick secretions inside. I could hear her trying to breathe around all the mucus and it was difficult for her to feed. I actually did the wash before I filmed this but there was still some left so I did it a second time but had my 5 year old son film it the second time to show people how to do it. So this wash recorded here is relatively short. You can spray a little bit longer to get more mucus out, or do it once, wait a few minutes for it to mix and lose up the mucus and have it drip out, then do it again.
RSV is back: FAQ We are seeing a tsunami of respiratory illnesses and, in its wake, severe disease and overcrowded hospitals. This is mainly driven by RSV, with flu picking up steam. COVID-19 infections have yet to start rising, but we still expect these to uptick soon.
16 min podcast on fever. Here are a few take home points:
- The definition of a fever is 100.4
- Fever is your friend! It is the body’s appropriate immune response to fight infection. It boosts the immune system, it slows down viral activity and slows down your child so energy can be redirected at fighting the infection.
- You do not need to treat fever unless the fever is causing significant harm such as discomfort, affecting drinking/hydration or sleeping.

Vaccines for 5-11 year olds: FDA meeting cliff notes Today VRBPAC (an external scientific advisory committee to the FDA) voted in favor of the Pfizer COVID19 vaccine for 5-11 year olds. VRBPAC was the second stop in a long process to get the vaccine authorized for emergency use. This was a much anticipated meeting for two reasons:
What do you do when your toddler puts beads up his nose?!
Today, my 3 year old’s day care called and said David put two beads up his nose. They got the first one out, but were unable to remove the second. Dad picked him up from day care and brought him home where I was working. I examined his nose with the light from my otoscope and saw the bead pretty deep in there. We decided to attempt a “mother’s Kiss” and wanted to share with you all how it is done!
