A small reminder for the Holidays
JWHolley.com

Fa-la-la-la-la ... Another Perspective of the Holidays

“’Tis the season to be jolly ...”
.. and many of us are - some because we are always inclined to be regardless of the season, some because ‘the holidays’ remind and inspire us, and some because we see the value of finding our way here at this time of the year even if ‘other’ circumstances in our lives and the world may not point us in this direction.

Another truth for many, is that this can be and often is one of the most challenging and difficult times of the year. One’s ‘life circumstances’ and the state of the world generally do not take a break and declare a holiday simply because it’s December. In fact, there are many pressures that add to our stress because it’s ‘the holidays.’

There is the pressure to be ‘happy/joyful/loving/generous,’ and so on, despite what might be going on in our personal lives. There may be additional pressure from this because we can’t or don’t feel it’s right to tell others of our struggles when we’re all supposed to be “jolly” and making others jolly as well. There may be pressures around finances and not having even enough for ourselves, perhaps to even pay the bills, much less to buy presents, and to be generous to those ‘less fortunate.’ Tensions within families can reach breaking points because of these and other pressures, and many face let-down and disappointment in the face of how things ‘really’ are, as opposed to how the image and expectation of the season imagines them.

So, the question is how do we navigate our way through this season in the face of many of us struggling.

For those of us who are struggling, sometimes it helps just knowing we are not alone, we are not the only ones struggling. We might seek outside support through psychotherapy or support groups, or finding the people close to us who we trust, and telling them the truth about our struggles. We can read about how others worked their way through impossible odds, or about how we might help our selves. Many find solace through faith in their spiritual beliefs. There is tremendous power in being of service to others - maybe, rather than buying gifts for our family when we’re struggling for money, we, as a family, volunteer to serve food to hungry and homeless, or visit a hospital to share love and read stories or play with the patients who are not at home for their holiday. It is my experience, that when we give of ourselves, we tend to forget our own problems, at least for a while, feel better, and sometimes even gain more appreciation for what we do have.

For those of us who are fortunate enough to have lives that are full and satisfying and that feel safe, perhaps we can be more sensitive to the struggles of others, especially our friends and loved ones - to be quicker to ask how they’re doing, and to be willing to really listen to their struggles. Maybe we can offer help in the way of providing food, or gifts, or simply warm accepting hearts and our love and friendship. The point is to pay just a bit more attention to what may be just underneath the ‘trying’ to be joyful, and then to offer whatever we can to help support our loved ones. Notice I said ‘support’ and not ‘fix.’ We may not be able to make their struggles go away, but we most definitely can ease the burden by offering our love and understanding, sometimes material resources, our ‘support,’ to them.

Either way, talking with our family and others about the ‘truth’ of ours and their situations, creating ideas and making decisions on how to best approach these holidays in ways that are satisfying and comforting ... and hopefully more joyful ... and sharing our experience–whatever that may be, should contribute to making the holidays the best they can be for everyone.

With this in mind, please take good care of yourselves and those you love. Reach out and remind yourselves that we are not alone, and can both offer and receive help to and from each other. I believe this is the essence of the Holidays, regardless of ‘circumstances.’

And please have a safe holiday.
Boas festas e feliz natal.
