NEW course: Pointe Safe for Parents
by Kendall Alway PT, DPT

* Do you have questions about going en pointe?
* Are you the parent or guardian of a young dancer starting pointe?
* Are you considering going en pointe?

You have questions. We have answers.

🩰 Please join us this Sunday, February 25th at 9am PST live on Zoom.
You can register by scanning the QR code above or visiting the link in our bio.

🩰 How did we make Pointe Safe for Parents?
We asked our Pointe Safe Certified Instructors if there is anything they wish parents knew about their child going en pointe, and we listened!

We developed this course to share information about dancers transitioning en pointe, and to further communicate with dance parents about pointe readiness.

Who says cross training can’t be fun? We look forward to this every year. I see eccentric loading, dynamic stabilization, strategy, deceleration, balance and more in the form of “walk like the Sanderson Sisters”, “avoid the flying bats (beanbags)”, “headstone hopping”, “jumping spiders”, “pumpkin picking”, and an always wild “candy scramble”. I hope what they see is some hard work and mostly fun with their friends. Happy and safe Halloween everyone! 🎃

How an Oakland-based dancer went from krumping to ballet and now the big screen 09/29/2023

I was lucky enough to work with Babatunji a couple times backstage with Lines Ballet. He radiates light, and it was an honor to meet him. His story is inspiring. I hope you’ll give this a read. Can’t wait to see Flower!

On Leaving the Life of the Body: A Dancer Reports 09/21/2023

This is beautifully written, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read.

The Perils of Forcing Hyperextension in Ballet: A Plea for Educated Practice 08/30/2023

Here is the post I referenced this morning for those interested.

The Perils of Forcing Hyperextension in Ballet: A Plea for Educated Practice Social media promoting unsafe hyperextension techniques, disregarding students' limits and health.

08/30/2023

✋ I will not repost photos of unsafe practices, so here is one with me and a Lego Degas as a filler.

⚠️This is about overstretching. One of the most dangerous and ineffective ways to gain USEFUL range of motion.

👎This madness is only going to start to end when we stop giving the social media posts attention. Stop rewarding the damage being caused with our “likes” and “OMG gorge” and “so jealous” and “gonna try that today!”.

Keep scrolling. Show your support in other ways.

😢Your children aren’t trick ponies. These practices do not serve their well-being or ensure their future career. It will more likely completely derail it.

🗞️There was a very timely post from PBT today and I will share the link in my bio for the rest of the week.

🚨 We are sounding the alarm. Please listen.

🛑 BEFORE YOU BUY BACK TO SCHOOL SHOES! 👟

💁🏼‍♀️Pro Tip: instead of just doing the “wiggle your toes” trick to check sizing - simply remove the shoe insert and have them stand on it.

😳 The pink insert shoe “fit” with the wiggle test, but look how much her foot is spilling over the side of the insert! You can see how much her foot would be squeezed in the actual shoe (and those were a “wide”).

🤔Black insert definitely better…

😁Gold inserts best. No spillage, and it’s a foot shaped shoe. She put those on and said “oh, my foot feels free”! Feet need room to function how they’re supposed to, and many shoes fail in that respect.

*not medical advice, just my opinion based on my experience as a PT and mom. This trick can be helpful for adults as well! I certainly do it when I buy shoes.
