The Montford Point Marines
Something pretty amazing and historical happened at the Tubman Museum in Macon, Georgia for Juneteenth. Montford Point Marine Association Chapter #35 Warner Robins, GA was honored to take part in the UNTOLD STORIES: Macon's African American History Program.
The two day event began with a Preview Reception for the re-opening of the Local History Gallery where a Special Exhibit Honoring the Montford Point Marines was on display. NMPMA Chapter 35 Members attended this reception, greeted visitors and answered questions about the rich history of Montford Point.
The following day a formal program was set aside to Honor The Montford Point Marines during a Dedication Ceremony where Chapter 35 Members presented a plaque to the museum to commemorate all of the Montford Pointers with connections to Macon and Middle Georgia that have been located to date.
Chapter President, Tony Price addressed the capacity audience in attendance which included representation from at least ten families of Original Montford Pointers. This past week Chapter 35 members came together to pay their final respects to Captain Joseph E. Lyons, Jr, a devoted member of Chapter 35 and strong supporter of the National Montford Point Marine Association until the very end.
Captain Lyons' distinguished military career is highlighted by his service in the Vietnam conflict, where he earned a battlefield commission to the Officer ranks.
Despite being reverted back to the Enlisted ranks, he rose to the esteemed position of Sergeant Major before retiring from active duty. In recognition of his exceptional service, he was ultimately reinstated to his highest rank held, "Mustang" Captain.
Captain Lyons was a man of fierce compassion and dedication, both to his country and his family. Personal awards included The Bronze Star with Combat V and 3 Purple Hearts. His legacy of service and commitment will be remembered and honored by all who knew him. He will be missed immensely by the members of Chapter 35 and the broader community.
Rest in peace Joe. Your contributions and sacrifices will never be forgotten.
Recently Chapter 35 partnered again with Rebuilding Together Warner Robins to participate in the Rebuilding Together Warner Robins Safe and Healthy Housing Kits Program. Working together works. Helping to repair homes, revitalizing our community, rebuilding lives...one home at a time.
