This year's SSHSA Ship of the Year is the Queen Mary 2! Since her spectacular naming by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II on January 8, 2004, Queen Mary 2 has been the remarkable flagship of Cunard Line. She has since become one of the most celebrated ships in the world, an icon of legendary style and elegance. Queen Mary 2 was constructed in France by Chantiers de l’Atlantique as a passenger ocean liner and cruise ship, embodying Cunard's tradition of transatlantic shipping for the modern era. Queen Mary 2 recently celebrated her 20th Anniversary in service as the only true ocean liner in the world today. SSHSA honors Cunard Line and acknowledges Queen Mary 2's continuing legacy, as she set sail on August 23, 2024, to complete her 400th transatlantic crossing.

in 1961, Joseph F. Braun took this picture of the former SS Mayflower at Nantasket Beach in Hull, Massachusetts. The Mayflower provided passenger service between Boston and Nantasket Beach from the 1890s through the 1930s. In the 1940s she was taken out of service, grounded at Nantasket Beach, and converted into a nightclub called the the Showboat. The Showboat operated for many years, and in the autumn of 1979, caught fire under unknown circumstances and burned to the ground. Braun Brothers Collection, SSHSA Archives.

"Thank you very much for your letter of March 5th, and for sending me the literature about the Steamship Historical Society of America. I am, of course, greatly interested in that society and am thoroughly in sympathy with its aims. I, therefore, wish that you would be kind enough to say to Mr. Leland D. Wood, the President, that I shall be very glad to be elected an honorary member of the society.

An interesting future lies before the American Merchant Marine and I am sure that the Steamship Historical Society can be helpful in giving wise counsel." – Franklin Delano Roosevelt

George G. Sharp, Inc. is a marine design and naval architecture firm established in 1920 in New York City by George Gillies Sharp, former Chief Surveyor of the American Bureau of Shipping. The firm started with the design of excursion steamboats on the Delaware and Hudson rivers, then moved into oceangoing passenger and cargo shipping. From 1934 Sharp designed a standardized series of merchant ships for the U.S. Department of Commerce. During World War II Sharp designed the standardized Victory ship, of which 534 were built, and 50 es**rt carriers.

in 1915, the SS Eastland and four other Great Lakes passenger steamers—Theodore Roosevelt, Petoskey, Racine, and Rochester—were chartered to take employees from Western Electric Company's Hawthorne Works in Cicero, Illinois to a picnic in Michigan City, Indiana.

Following the Titanic disaster just three years earlier, the federal Seamen's Act was passed in March of 1915, which stipulated that ships now had to carry lifeboats and rafts based on the number of persons on the ship and not — as before — on tonnage. This additional weight may have made Eastland more dangerous by making her even more top-heavy.

At 7:28 a.m., Eastland lurched sharply and rolled completely onto her port side, coming to rest on the river bottom with barely half of the vessel submerged. Many passengers had already moved below decks and so hundreds were trapped inside by the water and the sudden rollover. The ship was just 20 feet from the wharf, and the crew of the nearby vessel Kenosha responded quickly by pulling alongside the hull to allow stranded passengers to leap to safety.

Unfortunately, 844 passengers and four crew members died. Many of the passengers on Eastland were immigrants, with large numbers from present-day Czech Republic, Poland, Norway, Germany, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Hungary, and Austria.
