U.S. Capitol Police
Defending Congress, the U.S. Capitol, and democracy since 1828.
1 pm EST UPDATE: The exercise is finished. Thank you!
———
EXERCISE: This morning we will be conducting an active shooter training exercise on the East Front of the U.S. Capitol. Please do not be alarmed if you see emergency vehicles, large numbers of police officers, or hear simulated gunshots used for training purposes.
Today, in United States District Court in Washington, D.C., 37-year-old David Dempsey was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the January 6, 2021, violence at the United States Capitol. Dempsey had previously pleaded guilty to two felony counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers with a deadly weapon on January 4, 2024.
United States Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said, “David Dempsey was one of the most violent participants and at times lead parts of the assaults on multiple officers who were protecting the Capitol that day. We thank the FBI, the Department of Justice, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their work in investigating and prosecuting this case.”

Yesterday we brought in trained and equipped law enforcement officers from our partner agencies to assist us in securing the Joint Meeting of Congress. We worked together to hold the police line to ensure the Legislative Branch could do their work and protect the U.S. Capitol Grounds. Thank you!
Yesterday we brought in trained and equipped law enforcement officers from our partner agencies to assist us in securing the Joint Meeting of Congress. We worked together to hold the police line to ensure the Legislative Branch could do their work and protect the U.S. Capitol Grounds. Thank you all for your help!
For safety reasons, we are closing these roads on Capitol Grounds ahead of the Prime Minister of Israel's address to a Joint Meeting of Congress.
Since we were notified of the Prime Minister’s visit, our Department has been working around the clock with our federal, state, and local partners. For safety reasons, we cannot provide specific security details, but generally the plan includes adding more officers – including from several outside agencies – continuing robust intelligence sharing with our law enforcement partners and ensuring there are plenty of resources for our teams.
We anticipate a lot of demonstrators to show up. The United States Capitol Police respects everyone’s First Amendment rights, however all demonstrations must be done peacefully and legally. It is illegal to cross an established police line, such as the bike rack barriers that we use around Capitol Grounds.
If you are in the area — looking for a rewarding job with great pay and federal benefits — come check us out on Saturday!
HEADS UP: This morning, there will be a low-flying helicopter around the U.S. Capitol for a routine photography flight.
Have a great day!
We hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July!
WEATHER ALERT: A thunderstorm is heading toward the U.S. Capitol. If you are here for the
A Capitol Fourth, please follow the direction of our officers. In the meantime, we are temporarily stopping entry screening because of the likelihood of severe weather.

Like father like son! During our recent recruit graduation, Officer Jimmy Santana did something he had waited a long time for. It was time for him to pin a badge on his son, Officer Elijah Santana, who officially began his journey with the USCP. Officer Elijah Santana says "It feels surreal. Growing up my dad was my biggest supporter while I played baseball. Now for the first time ever, we get to be on the same team, wear the same uniform, and support each other. Getting to have my father as a teammate gives me a chance to learn a lot more as I grow within each part of the Department and build a family of friendships just like he did." 💙
The American flag is a strong symbol of freedom across our great nation. Happy Flag Day!
Last year, a family got into a bike accident on Capitol Hill. For months, the mother has been trying to get her daughters back on their bikes after they witnessed the accident.
It wasn't until today that the girls decided to give biking to school a try again when they learned that the USCP would be next to them every pedal.
The girls were all smiles when they safely arrived at school and are now more confident than ever to ride their bikes in public again! 👏

The United States Capitol Police (USCP) is investigating a roughly one-inch by one-inch zip lock bag with a white powdery substance, which field tested positive for co***ne.
The small bag was found on the floor of a hallway inside USCP headquarters. The hallway is on the second floor in an area that has been a staging spot for furniture and supplies. The area is heavily trafficked by various contractors and employees. It is also near offices such as Prisoner Processing, Crime Scene, Intel and Reports Processing.
The baggie was found in the middle of the floor just before 1:00 p.m. by an officer, who immediately reported it to a supervisor. The residue was field tested and came back positive for co***ne. The USCP Investigations Division has opened an investigation, which will include further testing of the residue, as well as DNA testing of the baggie. We will provide more information when it becomes available.

Happy Mother's Day!
Every year we hold a memorial service to honor the United States Capitol Police officers who died in the line of duty. It is our most sacred event. Let us never forget our fallen brothers and always keep their families in our hearts.
This May, USCP's Hazardous Devices Section (HDS) celebrates its 50th anniversary since its founding. For 50 years, the USCP technicians, also known as our Bomb Squad, have kept the U.S. Capitol building and the Congressional community safe. Thank you HDS!
A lot has changed since the 1800s! Happy Birthday USCP! 🎂🎈
