Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America’s Armed Forces.

Memorial Day can be traced back to the Civil War (which ended in 1865) and a desire to honor our dead. On the 5th of May in 1868, General John Logan who was the national commander of the Grand Army of the republic, officially proclaimed it in his General Order No. 11.

With the Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 – 363), it is now observed on the last Monday in May by almost every state.

Have a safe holiday and remember that freedom is not free. Freedom was fought for and obtained by those service members willing to die for this cause.

Happy National Police Week!

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

We are excited that our CALEA accreditation decals just came in today for our cruisers. We knew we needed something to add that finishing touch to our fleet to make it picture perfect, but we didn’t know what it was until now.

Our fleet was missing the decals to display that we are the gold standard in public safety. Therefore, we have started to proudly display these decals on our fleet and they match perfectly with our colors of black, blue, and silver.

They said it could not be done and that it was impossible. But through hard work and perseverance we proved them wrong. We are officially the first agency in Washington, DC under DCMR Title 6A-11 to be accredited by CALEA for basic law enforcement (LE1). We were unanimously approved by the CALEA commissioners during our hearing.

The CALEA Accreditation programs provide public safety agencies with an opportunity to voluntarily meet an established set of professional standards, which require:

Comprehensive and uniform written directives that clearly define authority, performance, and responsibilities. Reports and analyses to make fact-based and informed management decisions. Preparedness to address natural or man-made critical incidents. Community relationship-building and maintenance. Independent review by subject matter experts. Continuous pursuit of excellence through annual reviews and other assessment measures.

We thank all of those employees (past and present) and others who have helped us on this four year journey to bring home the gold standard in policing to Washington, DC.

We challenge our neighboring agencies (Washington Metropolitan Police Dept., University of the District of Columbia Police Department, DC Public Library Police Department, District of Columbia Housing Authority Police Department, DC Public Schools Police - Law Enforcement Division, DC Department of General Services Protective Services Police Department, Mayor Bowser, and The Council of the District of Columbia) to join the gold standard of public safety and get their accreditation. We are willing to help with this journey of law enforcement excellence.

Veterans Day is a good time to remember that our freedom isn’t guaranteed. On this day, we honor all current and former members of the Armed Services. Our country’s greatness is built on the foundation of your courage and sacrifice.

It’s protected by the men and women in our Armed Services. There’s no way to thank our veterans for everything they sacrifice for our freedom, but on Veterans Day, we have to try. So thank you to all our service men and women, both past and present.
