Honoring 3 Years of Aaliyah in Action It’s hard to put into words how grateful I am to see the growth and reach Aaliyah in Action has had since I launched this endeavor 3 years ago today, 7/19/21. 

It’s hard to put into words how grateful I am to see the growth and reach Aaliyah in Action has had since I launched this endeavor 3 years ago today, 7/19/21.

As of today we’ve provided over 1,900 packages to families who have experienced perinatal or neonatal loss. Aaliyah in Action has reached 40+ states, 3 countries, can be found in over 60 hospitals and has provided hundreds of packages to individual families who reached out looking for support.

What I thought would be a small, impactful, local nonprofit has turned into a nation, and worldwide, reaching support for thousands of families facing, what I consider, the worst loss of all. I never could have imagined the opportunities that would be placed in front of me or the amazing people I’ve met along the way who have helped AiA grow.

I am so incredibly grateful and hopeful that AiA can play a huge role in this country - not only supporting families through perinatal or neonatal loss but also being a part of solutions and conversations to prevent this form of loss from happening in the first place.

Right now we have a fundraiser going for the support books that accompany our packages- it’s the most costly element of our program. Please, contribute if you can and share with others. A gift of $10 provides one book for a family, a gift of $30 provides a set for Mom, Dad and siblings.

Spent time this morning in the VP’s office for a very special event about the passing of the Stillbirth Prevention Act which will be signed by President Biden this week (hopefully tomorrow).

I’m so thankful to be invited into these spaces. To know and network with so many great individuals, working incredibly hard on lowering the rate of preventable stillbirth, and to properly support bereaved families, is truly a gift from my A ♥️

A Self-Care Soirée for Aaliyah in Action Help Aaliyah in Action reach their goal by donating or sharing with your friends.

We are so grateful to announce our newest support to all AiA packages. Our beautiful friend, Bree, of created an abbreviated 8-week version of her Recovery After Loss program especially for AiA package recipients.

The trauma our bodies take from this type of loss is significant. It’s hard to know where to start to try to heal on the physical elements. is walking the same path we are and has created this beautiful trigger free holistic program in honor of her daughter, Rainey. 💛🤍

We have over 10 hospitals that have asked to be provided Aaliyah in Action packages. Will you be a hospital hero and support? Providing for these 10 hospitals over the course of this month equates to over $6,000 when you include shipping.

The growth of our program has been amazing and that is because of YOU! Thank you for always supporting our mission and for spreading the word! Our goal is to provide for any hospital that comes to us, regardless of budgetary restrictions but we need you to spread the mission that we need help.

Over 90% of our hospital partners rely on the generosity of our donors to allow them to have access to our Aaliyah in Action packages. & I know how incredibly grateful the staff and the families who receive our packages are.

Sharing a very important initiative today led by !!

So often parents are not properly educated on their ability to obtain a stillbirth certificate from their provider or health department. Every state has a different process and/or type of certificate, some not providing anything to families.

In full transparency, I needed to obtain legal counsel in order to, essentially, force DC Health to implement the stillbirth certificate legislation THEY had passed. Nobody else held them accountable, so I took it into my own hands. That shouldn’t need to occur to receive a certificate signifying Aaliyah’s existence. Parents who experience stillbirth should know their rights and what they are entitled to in this realm.

Ana, Liam’s Mom, has been doing so much work for parents needing guidance about what their state offers in terms of a stillbirth certificate. The goal: “to understand if stillbirth parents are being told about this option to recognize the birth of their babies. Our hope is that your responses will help improve the implementation of these laws.” If you’ve experienced this form of loss, please consider filling out her survey as she continues to gather data from other US states in an effort to straighten this neglected area.

Right now, Ana has been working on a bill in the Illinois General Assembly that would require a hospital “must notify the gestational parent of the parent’s right to receive a certificate of birth resulting in stillbirth.” I’d love to see this reach more states and that can happen if data is collected reflecting different family experiences. & I commend Ana for all her hard work on this initiative!

Aaliyah has created a very distinct path for me that I proudly take on daily & it all got started with my persistence on the inclusion of paid leave for families who experience stillbirth. I take the “action” in Aaliyah in Action very seriously and do my best to in all my work for bereaved families.

& I can’t leave out how grateful I am to have met so many likeminded, powerhouse, women both before, and now on, this journey.

Since the first dismissive email DCPS sent me, mere days after the stillbirth of my daughter, I’ve made it my mission to make sure no mother ever feels the way I felt reading those words.

I’m honored to have been included in the response letter to the Congressional Paid Leave Working Group. Mothers in my position have been silenced for for too long - told to move on as if the child they held in their arms was never really there at all.

I think I’ve make it abundantly clear since Aaliyah’s death that I refuse to let this continue to be the norm. There’s power in numbers - so much for paid family leave after loss has happened in the last few years and I am so comforted in knowing more maternal health organizations and key stakeholders are finally hearing our voices, no matter how shaky and full of grief they may be.

Achieving paid family leave for all will be a difficult task, but I have confidence it will be done & I hope to see mothers who have experienced the devastating loss we have be included in the victory.
