Biden, in rare appearance since stepping aside, touts moonshot program 08/20/2024

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/08/13/biden-rare-appearance-moonshot-election/

ACS CAN has a long and proud history of working with elected leaders on both sides of the aisle to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. Simply put, cancer doesn't care how you vote. That's why it is so exciting that President Biden has announced renewed momentum in his Cancer Moonshot Initiative! This is a deeply personal issue that has taken too much from too many for too long. And with the President's support and a sustained commitment from Republicans and Democrats in Congress we can end the scourge of cancer. Thank you, President Biden, for working for cancer patients and their families!

That's also why we need support from US Senate candidates Jon Tester and Tim Sheehy. However, thus far to date neither candidate has signed onto the Cancer Promise.

Cancer diagnoses are at an all-time high. Congress must prioritize cancer research funding. 05/21/2024

Do you know what the number one source of cancer research is?
(Hint: It's not the American Cancer Society!)

It's the US government - and right now Congress is preparing their budget for the next fiscal year. We need your help to send a loud and clear message that we need to continue to invest in cancer research.

Please take a minute to sign our online petition and let Senators Tester and Daines, and Congressman Rosendale know that you think cancer research funding deserves their support. Then take the next step and help us spread the word - share with others on your FB page.

Cancer diagnoses are at an all-time high. Congress must prioritize cancer research funding. ACS CAN is the leading cancer advocacy organization that is working every day to make cancer issues a national priority.

Experts say Medicaid expansion critical to saving Wyoming's health care industry 05/07/2024

This news story out of Wyoming highlights the fight for Medicaid Expansion in our neighboring state. There are so many caregivers and healthcare workers in Montana, just like Angie Dax, that have healthcare coverage because Republicans and Democrats worked together to pass Medicaid Expansion nearly a decade ago!

Experts say Medicaid expansion critical to saving Wyoming's health care industry CHEYENNE — Casper resident Angie Dax sat on the edge of her bed with a bottle of pills in her hand.

Montana 04/24/2024

Did you know… simply having health coverage is one of the largest determining factors for survivorship against cancer?

Research continues to show that cancer patients living in states with lower income Medicaid eligibility limits see significantly worse survival rates for most cancer in comparison to states with higher limits.

Medicaid expansion has delivered staggering results for Montana health outcomes and literally saved lives. Through February, the Montana Department of Health & Human Services reports Medicaid expansion enrollees have benefitted from 107,224 colon cancer and 147,778 breast cancer screenings since 2017. The state also reports 30,485 cases of colon cancer potentially averted and 4,088 cases of breast cancer treated.

This week the Senate introduced the Multi-Cancer Early Detection Act, which would allow to cover multi-cancer screening tests, once approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and proven to have clinical benefit. The bill aims to improve future equitable access to new and innovative cancer screenings among Medicare beneficiaries in order to increase early detection of more cancers for more individuals.

Because the risk of cancer increases with age, Medicare beneficiaries make up the majority of individuals diagnosed with and are especially vulnerable to the disease. The Act creates a pathway to ensure timely Medicare coverage of new, innovative multi-cancer screening tests and expand access to early detection once clinical benefit is shown.

“Detecting cancer early can be the difference between life and death,” said American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network - ACS CAN President Lisa Lacasse. “While overall cancer mortality rates have been declining for more than two decades in the United States, racial, socioeconomic and geographic disparities persist and have a higher prevalence in underserved communities. A simple blood test may be more accessible to such residents, extending screening opportunities to rural areas across the nation and within communities of color by ensuring Medicare recipients can access new, innovative screening options, once FDA-approved and proven effective.”

We call on Congress to prioritize passage of this important legislation this year.

The FDA released its proposed rules today to eliminate menthol ci******es and all flavors in all ci**rs. Ending menthol flavoring in ci******es is a long overdue step forward in reducing the number of young people who start using to***co products and Big Tobacco’s targeting of Black communities, who consistently report the highest prevalence of menthol cigarette use. Additionally, eliminating flavors in all ci**rs will help reduce youth initiation and save kids from a lifetime of addiction to these deadly products.

The long-awaited action to eliminate menthol flavoring in ci******es ends the decades-long deference to the to***co industry, which has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to profit from products that result in death.

They did it! Last night, after months of delay, Congress passed a budget that increases funding for cancer research. We know this funding is long overdue and desperately needed. Thank you to the thousands of ACS CAN volunteers who raised their voices to help make this happen.

This is a big step. But we also know Congress can do more. Stay tuned for more opportunities to make your voice heard when Congress starts negotiating this year’s budget bill.
