Who joined us? 🤝
- Donors
- Alumni
- Local government officials

🌍✈️ The next destination on our Taste of New Futures: Around the World itinerary is Cameroon!

5 Fun Facts about Cameroon:
1️⃣ 🏞️🏜️🏖️ Cameroon is known as "Africa in Miniature" because of its geographical and cultural diversity. Within the country, you’ll find landscapes and terrain reflective of each of Africa’s climatic zones including rainforest, desert, swamps, savannah, and beaches. It's a biodiversity hotspot! 🌿🦁🐘

2️⃣ ⚽ Cameroon's Indomitable Lions were the first African team to reach the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals in 1990! 🏆

3️⃣ 🦐 Cameroon's name comes from a crustacean, the shrimp! Early inhabitants of the region included the Sao civilization around Lake Chad and the Baka hunter-gathers in the southeastern rainforest. When Portuguese explorer Fernando Po reached the Cameroon coast in 1472, he was struck by the large numbers of prawns he found in the River Wouri. Portuguese explorers renamed the area Rio dos Camarões (Shrimp River). This soon became Cameroon in English. In 1984 the country became the Republic of Cameroon.

4️⃣ 🗣️ Cameroon has two official languages (English and French), but residents speak over 286 different local languages and dialects!

5️⃣ 🌋 Mount Cameroon, at 14,435 feet, is the highest peak in Sub-Saharan and Central Africa - and it's an active volcano, erupting as recently as 2012! 🔥

Twice a year, New Futures invests in systemically excluded young people in the Greater Washington region who plan to pursue an associate degree or professional certification. As the economy and workforce change, half of all positions filled in the next five years will require some postsecondary credentials but less than a bachelor’s degree. New Futures is the only organization in this region with an intentional focus on postsecondary credentials outside the traditional four-year college model, building a pipeline to high-growth industries and financial well-being.

Today, hear from advisor Katie and Scholar Ahnaf about their New Futures experience! Learn more by visiting https://spurlocal.org/blog/2024/09/10/new-futures-believes-in-young-people/ and sign up to get a Taste of New Futures on October 4.

🌎✈️Introducing the first of the destinations we'll be exploring at Taste of New Futures: Around the World on October 4th!

5 Fun Facts about Sri Lanka🌴🇱🇰:
1️⃣ 🐘🐆🐊 Sri Lanka is slightly larger than the state of West Virginia, but has incredible biodiversity. It's home to 123 species of mammals (such as elephants, leopards, and crocodiles), 227 species of birds, 178 species of reptiles, 122 species of amphibians, and many other animal species.

2️⃣ ☕️Sri Lanka is well known for its tea production. Once known as Ceylon, the first tea plant on the island was once displayed at the Royal Botanical Garden. The country remains a leading exporter of tea with nearly 1 million of its 22 million residents working in the industry.

3️⃣ 👑Sri Lanka was the first country in the world to have a woman prime minister. In July 1960, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, won the general election and became the first woman prime minister in the world.

4️⃣ 📚Sri Lanka has the highest literacy rate in South Asia. The country has a literacy rate of 92%, making it the highest in South Asia as well as one of the highest in Asia.

5️⃣ 💎Sri Lanka is nicknamed the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean” and is known as the “Teardrop of India.” The country is known for the plethora of precious gemstones as well as its rich biodiversity. The island’s teardrop shape and location off of India’s coast is what informs its second name.

BONUS Fun Fact:
6️⃣🍀Sri Lanka is the source of the word “serendipity” in the English language. Derived from the word “Serendip,” the name Arabs and Persians had for Sri Lanka, the word was created in 1754 by the writer Horace Walpole. Following his reading of the Persian fairy tale, “The Three Princes of Serendip,” Walpole created the word “serendipity” to describe the princes who "were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of."

Today is International Day of Friendship!

Year after year, we find friendship in every corner of New Futures. Between alumni and advisors, among Scholars, and throughout our growing network of supporters, friendship flourishes. No matter where you look, community is at the heart of our work!

“I’ve found a community among the Scholars because many of them have been through the same things as me. Sometimes you just need someone to talk to, and I’ve found a safe space at New Futures.” – Litzy, Scholar

The cost of postsecondary attendance is one of the major barriers young people face as they pursue educational attainment. And no wonder! As of 2024, the national average student loan debt for associate degree holders is $19,270!

Now compare that with New Futures Scholars:
- 54% of our alumni graduate with ZERO educational debt
- 75% of our alumni have less than $10,000 in educational debt, including those who go on to pursue bachelor's or graduate degrees

We believe that no one should have to break the bank to gain an education. That's why we offer a flexible financial scholarship, along with access to emergency funding to help Scholars navigate the unexpected, helping young people overcome one of the most significant barriers to entry into higher education.

"I was terrified of the cycle of college debt, and New Futures has really alleviated that stress from my life." - New Futures alum
