Assessing the Adoption of Point-of-sale Technology by Corner Stores in Mexico | IPA 08/22/2024

The introduction of new payment technologies can greatly impact how spend money, in turn influencing businesses’ decisions to adopt, and ultimately their sales outcomes. Following the rollout of debit cards to recipients in Mexico, corner stores increased their adoption of point-of-sale (POS) terminals by 18%. Other consumers adopted debit cards & shifted spending to corner stores, boosting sales & profits. In areas outside the rollout, most corner store owners estimated lower changes in profits & new customers if they adopted POS terminals than what actually occurred in rollout areas.
