Every parent in the United States should be able to provide their children with food, clothing, a warm and well-lit home, and yes, soap and the occasional Happy Meal. This week’s Census data drive home the importance of both a guaranteed income for families with children, as well as in-kind supports like SNAP to help families make ends meet and provide what their children deserve—during a pandemic, and at all times.

getREAL (Recognize. Engage. Affirm. Love.) was launched in 2012 to transform child welfare and promote the healthy development of LGBTQ+ and gender expansive children and youth. We owe all youth this, and to achieve this we must reimagine policies and programs in ways that center and support gender expansive and LGBTQ+ children, youth, their families and communities.
In June 2024, CSSP President and CEO Leonard Burton joined Senior Fellow Bill Bettencourt for conversation about how and why we need to show up for LGBTQ+ youth. As part of their conversation, they highlighted the groundbreaking getREAL initiative--both its past and future, discussed why we need Pride all year long, and called for critical supports and a focus on community to ensure our young people can grow into healthy adults, loved, and respected for all that they are.

For three years, hundreds of people in Texas and Illinois got payments of $1,000 a month, no strings attached. That extra, reliable cushion allowed recipients to stop living paycheck to paycheck, get better paying jobs, go back to school...or simply enjoy their lives more.
CSSP knows the importance of cash assistance, whether in the form of a stimulus check, enhanced unemployment benefits, or the Child Tax Credit. Unrestricted cash benefits allow families to meet a wide range of needs in ways that make the most sense for them. When made inclusive and accessible, cash assistance can also effectively advance racial equity.

In order for a permanent child allowance to reduce stress, improve economic well-being, and set families and communities up for a more secure future, it needs to be both designed and implemented to be anti-racist.
That means that it MUST respond to and meet the needs of Black, Latinx/e, Indigenous, and other families of color, and ultimately all families who need assistance.

As a society, we should support families without throwing up obstacles to their success. The barriers families experience in TANF are a direct product of policy decisions at the federal, state, and local level designed to limit families’ access to government assistance and rooted in racist and sexist ideas about who is deserving of society’s support.
Imagine a world where every child—and their parent—has the resources they need to succeed. Building that world means re-evaluating policies that are meant to help but are designed to harm—like TANF.
