51 for 51

51 votes to make Washington, D.C. the 51st state. Let's grant #DCStatehood and give the 700k+ mostly

04/22/2022

One year ago the House passed H.R. 51 – the Washington D.C. Admissions Act – with a record number of cosponsors.

Still today, the 700,000 mostly Black and Brown residents of D.C. don’t have full voting rights.

We can’t keep waiting. We need NOW.

04/18/2022

Another , another year without representation for the people of DC.

D.C. residents are forced to pay federal taxes each year, without any of the same rights as other Americans.

It's high time our community has equal representation in our democracy.

Why We Can’t Wait 04/16/2022

Today, exactly 160 year after enslaved people were freed in D.C., the project of emancipation is not yet complete for our majority-Black and Brown community.

Let’s commit to ending emancipation without representation.

Why We Can’t Wait The House voted for equal representation in Congress for the more than 700,000, mostly Black and Brown, residents of D.C. Now the Senate must act to make D.C. the 51st state with 51 votes. Together, let’s stop the wait.

Norton ‘extremely concerned’ about possible Republican bill to repeal D.C.’s home rule 02/15/2022

The Republican proposal to repeal D.C.'s Home Rule is a racist attack on our democracy.

D.C., a majority Black and Brown community, deserves a representative democracy and autonomy over our own laws.

Norton ‘extremely concerned’ about possible Republican bill to repeal D.C.’s home rule Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) recently said he was working on legislation that would repeal the 1973 D.C. Home Rule Act that created D.C.'s local government.

02/12/2022

D.C. residents couldn’t vote for the President until 1964.
D.C. residents couldn’t elect their own major or city council until 1973.

Let’s make sure D.C. residents don’t have to wait any longer for full representation and voting power.

Let’s make D.C. the 51st state.

Senate moves to confirm new D.C. judges amid vacancy crisis 02/10/2022

Three of the judges the Senate confirmed to D.C. courts are filling seats that have been empty for over four years.

The Senate is intruding on our affairs and allowing judicial vacancies in D.C. to go unaddressed for years.

We must control our courts. We need D.C. statehood.

Senate moves to confirm new D.C. judges amid vacancy crisis D.C. courts sounded the alarm on the crisis in December, pleading with the Senate to confirm nominees.

Reminder that the lack of D.C. statehood = over two centuries of voter suppression.

A reminder to kick off :

D.C. is a majority Black and Brown community.

And D.C. will be the first Black plurality state.

01/29/2022

Once we get , we’ll be the only plurality-Black state.

It’s time to expand Black political power.

01/28/2022

In the Constitution: Voting representation for all Americans.
Not in the Constitution: The filibuster.

We can’t let the filibuster block the voting power promised to D.C. residents in the Constitution.

Dr. King told us that the arc of the moral universe is long.

Together, we march down that arc towards justice.

Federal tax filing season has started.

Friendly reminder that D.C. pays more in federal taxes per capita than every state in the country — but still not enough to get congressional representation, apparently.

Let us say it again: Black women always show up and lead in the fight for democracy.

It’s long past due our democracy shows up, too.

Last Monday, we marched for voting rights.

Now, we continue the work.

On King Holiday, Hundreds Walk for Voting Rights and D.C. Statehood - The Washington Informer Hundreds of people participated in a Peace Walk in Ward 8 with the family of Martin Luther King III on Jan. 17, the official holiday of his father, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to call on the U.S. Senate to pass voting rights and D.C. statehood legislation.

— a movement of, for, and by D.C. residents.

01/20/2022

48 Senators chose democracy over the filibuster. That was not inevitable.

That’s the culmination of all your work from the past few years — from demanding Democratic candidates support 51 votes for the 51st state in 2019 to marching for the in 2022.

01/20/2022

Last night, 52 Senators chose the filibuster over voting rights.

As a community suffering from voter suppression for 200+ years, we know all too well how the filibuster blocks justice.

But we will continue to fight for the Douglass Commonwealth until we become the 51st state.

01/19/2022

Reminder: The filibuster is not in the Constitution.

But voting rights are mentioned 5 times.

The Senate needs to ensure D.C. residents can enjoy that constitutional right by passing .
