"Communities of color in the high-cost metros will not fare well without significant interventions [after COVID-19]. State and local governments should seize the opportunity to acquire properties during the slow real estate market."
Although people left cities at the beginning of the pandemic, they're coming back now. We still have an opportunity to secure properties for affordable housing; otherwise, we run the risk of aggressive gentrification and displacement in cities like DC.

Make your thoughts heard on the proposed changes to the Metro! Having access to public transit is a crucial factor in equitable development. Especially during a pandemic, when low-income workers are more likely to be required to go into work and commute to their jobs.
Thank you to HAT member Rob for sharing this!
We need your feedback on proposals to balance Metro's budget: https://covid-19servicechanges.questionpro.com
The Metrobus and Metrorail service provided today is only possible thanks to emergency federal funding in the CARES Act, but that money will soon run out. Without additional federal help, Metro will have to use every option to cover a budget shortfall of more than $200 million.
We’re preparing to resume fare collection on Metrobus and cut costs by limiting the use of contractors, furloughing employees, and deferring some capital program expenses. But the budget shortfall is so large, service cuts and layoffs will also be needed.
Proposed service changes include:
• Cutting Metrorail service (less trains)
• Closing Metrorail earlier
• Continuing reduced Metrobus service levels and hours

CC: Affordable housing and racial equity are deeply intertwined. Decades of segregationist urban planning and gentrification exclude Black and Brown families from the financial and familial security tied to affordable home ownership. At MANNA, Inc., we believe that home ownership is vital for low and middle-income families to succeed in our nation’s capital—providing stability for children to thrive in school, financial security to save for the future, and means to accrue multi-generational wealth. We strive to bridge that gap daily. MANNA commits to building equity in our communities through affordable housing, social services, and preserving diverse neighborhoods.
