Greetings,
I am pleased to extend an invitation to you to attend the upcoming virtual program celebrating the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act on September 19. As we commemorate this important milestone in our nation's history, it is crucial that we come together to reflect on the progress that has been made and the work that still lies ahead.
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law on August 6, 1965, by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This landmark piece of legislation was a response to the civil rights movement and sought to ensure that all Americans, regardless of race, had equal access to the ballot box. The act was a crucial step in the fight for civil rights and equality, and its impact continues to be felt to this day.
Three years after the Voting Rights Act was signed into law, Shirley Chisholm made history in 1968 by becoming the first Black woman to be elected to the United States Congress. Her groundbreaking achievement paved the way for future generations of Black women in politics and the civil rights movement. In 1972, Shirley Chisholm once again made history by becoming the first Black candidate for a major-party nomination for President of the United States, breaking down barriers and inspiring countless individuals across the nation
As we continue to honor the legacy of the Voting Rights Act, I am proud to announce that President Joseph R. Biden Jr. has proclaimed September 17, 2024, as National Voter Registration Day. President Biden calls on all eligible Americans to observe this day by ensuring that they are accurately registered and by committing to cast a ballot in upcoming elections.
As members of Blacks In Government, your voices and perspectives are invaluable in shaping the future of our nation. Your presence at this event is essential as we discuss the importance of protecting and expanding voting rights for all citizens.
I hope that you will join us for this important virtual program on September 19 as we celebrate the Voting Rights Act anniversary and National Voter Registration Day, and recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for equality and justice for all.

As we approach the National Day of Action on Voting, Project BIG Vote would like to urge you to engage with your regions and chapters to prepare for the upcoming general elections. With Election Day less than 60 days away, November 5, 2024, and early voting starting in over 25 states this October, now is the time to take action!
On September 17, 2024, The National Day of Action on Voting, let's mobilize! On this day please reach out to all members in your region or have your chapter leaders do so. A simple phone call, text message, or email can make a significant impact. Ask your members if they’ve checked their registration, made a plan to vote, and reviewed their ballots. Your direct outreach can help create an engaged and active electorate.
We want every member of Blacks In Government, Inc., and everyone connected to them, to ensure their vote is cast and counted.
