Biden Administration Moving Swiftly to Shut Down Horse Abuse 10/16/2023

Dr. Julianne Malveaux speaks out in support of protection for horses, "The world is watching, and more importantly, thousands of horses are waiting. The onus is on President Biden and Secretary Vilsack to bring about an end to their suffering.

There’s currently a public comment period on the proposed rule, open until October 20th. I’ll be weighing in to tell USDA to stop allowing horses to be victimized by scofflaws, and swiftly finalize and implement a strong new rule. I encourage like-minded folks to do the same here.

As I often mention, "Justice delayed is justice denied." In this case, protection delayed is protection denied. Let's not deny these animals the protection they need and deserve any longer."

Dr. Julianne Malveaux is an economist, author and educator based in Washington DC. She is President Emerita of Bennett College and served as the Inaugural Dean at the Cal State Los Angeles College of Ethnic Studies

Protect horses from the cruel practice of soring! 10/09/2023

Act now to protect horses from terrible cruelty! Horse soring is the intentional torture of Tennessee Walking, Racking and Spotted Saddle Horses, just to make them step high in the show ring.

The 1970 Horse Protection Act has failed to end soring. Now USDA is proposing to strengthen its regulations to close loopholes that have allowed soring to continue. They’re accepting public comments – but ONLY THROUGH OCTOBER 20th.

Please act today to tell USDA to quickly upgrade its regulations – these horses have waited too long to be free of pain!

Protect horses from the cruel practice of soring! No horse should be made to suffer for a blue ribbon—it is time that this cruelty, which is known as "soring," is stopped for good.

Secretariat Triple Crown celebration at Belmont subdued by death and air quality 06/09/2023

"Keith Dane, senior director of equine protection for the Humane Society of the United States, said Friday in a release that racing may be in its finals days without a genuine commitment to reform that puts the safety and well-being of the horses at the center of the sport.

“… We reflect on the string of horse deaths and doping scandals that sullied this racing circuit,” he wrote. “The staggering death count reminds of this grim reality: horses do not always survive the races they are entered in. Practices and conditions that fail to prioritize horse safety and reckless drug and medication use have created a deadly environment for racehorses, and potentially the entire racing industry.”"
