The final Technical Brief "Measuring Documentation Burden in Health Care" is available!
In June 2022, the AMIA 25x5 Taskforce nominated documentation burden for AHRQ review. They identified the need to better understand how documentation burden is measured in literature and to find measures that could track the impact of AMIA 25x5's efforts to reduce burden.
As documentation burden gains recognition, including the risks of passing the burden on to patients and caregivers, understanding and summarizing existing evidence of measurement options is critical.
AMIA 25x5 members Deborah Levy, MD, MPH, MS, and Victoria L. Tiase, PhD, RN-BC, FAMIA, FNAP, FAAN provided key input for the report.
Highlights of the report include:
Identifies 11 categories of measure of documentation burden, including EHR tasks, inbox management, workflow fragmentation, and administrative duties.
Most studies on documentation burden focus on U.S. physicians and nurses, but more research on measure validity and scalability is needed.
Future studies should include diverse healthcare perspectives and report validity evidence for multidimensional measurements.
