RAP, Inc. Wishes everyone a Safe and Happy Holiday!

12/24/2022

The Holidays can be difficult while focusing on your sobriety. Here are some tips from the Hazelden Betty Ford foundation to navigate and enjoy the Holiday season while maintaining your sobriety.

1. Have a Holiday escape plan -Plan ahead for uncomfortable situations and triggering environments. Attend a Twelve step Meeting beforehand or invite a sober friend to tag along.
2. Want to stay sober? Stay helpful- Look for an opportunity to be of service. Serve a meal at a homeless shelter, reach out to a newcomer at a meeting, spend time with an elderly loved one or neighbor. Each opportunity gets you further away from resentment, self pity and fear.
3. Be mindful of what you're drinking and thinking- Bring your own favorite non alcoholic drink to family gatherings. Be mindful of asking someone else to grab you a drink. If thoughts begin to creep in, shut them down immediately; talk it out with your sponsor or sober friend.
4. Some triggers and traps are optional - If a relative is going to grill you about rehab avoid them. If a relative is going to make you a stiff drink avoid them. If a holiday party is really all about drinking or other drug use make a brief appearance or do not attend. Staying sober and safeguarding your recovery is a must and always come first.
5. Practice self-care throughout the holidays- Celebrate the holiday season and the fullness of your sober life by taking time for yourself. Proper nutrition, gentle exercise and rest can do wonders for your well being. Nourish your spirit through personal reflection and connection with those you love.

The Holidays can be tough to navigate while in recovery. Here are 5 helpful reminders to help you avoid relapse.
1. Start each day with a plan. The key is staying focused on your goal of sobriety.
2. Know your triggers. The most common triggers correspond to HALT — when you feel hungry, angry, lonely, or tired. Take care of yourself, mentally and physically.
3. Don't forget to eat. Low blood sugar can leave you anxious or irritable. This can make you feel impulsive and tempted by substances.
4. Keep stress under control. Many people turn to alcohol or illegal substances as a way to cope with stress. So when stress strikes, take a few minutes to decompress and meditate instead. Push away thoughts of substance use.
5. Learn to move past your cravings. A craving only lasts about 20 minutes, so if you can stay strong for a short period, the urge should pass. Move to a different setting, meditate, or breathe. Remember how much is at risk if you give into your craving.

Remember, one day at a time...you got this!
