Road trip highlights schools as community hubs 10/15/2024

"Several visitors from Michigan Community Schools Coalition, a statewide group of community school practitioners, got a glimpse of how KSSN works during a recent “road trip.” Members of the coalition do work similar to KSSN around the state. The Michigan group is part of the national Coalition for Community Schools.

'We want to have them leaving with practical strategies and insight into how we operate,' said Shay Kraley, KSSN director of operations. “One of the fun mantras of our work is ‘If you’ve seen one community school, you’ve seen one community school.’ We want them to see a diversity of what we do.'

The other purpose of the event, she said, was to connect with more potential partners that are interested in supporting schools.

A community school is a place where students and families can find support. It also is a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources, Kraley said."

Reducing Chronic Absenteeism: Lessons from Community Schools 08/29/2024

Check out this new report from Learning Policy Institute underscoring the link between reduced chronic absenteeism and !

"Community schools have emerged as a promising approach to mitigate chronic absenteeism, as they are adept at organizing supports for students and families and creating conditions for rich learning and well-being. Support and funding for Community Schools has increased in recent years at both the federal and state level. California has become a leader in implementation in recent years, supported by an unprecedented $4.1 billion investment through the California Community Schools Partnership Program. The program provides grants that enable school and district partnerships with community agencies and local government to support students’ academic, physical, and mental development."

Reducing Chronic Absenteeism: Lessons from Community Schools There has been a significant decline in school attendance since the onset of the pandemic. This is concerning since chronically absent students are more likely to fall behind academically, disengage socially, and drop out of school. Community schools are a promising strategy to mitigate chronic abse...

Redesigning High Schools: 10 Features for Success 04/25/2024

Education aims to give every student opportunities to learn and thrive, but a majority of U.S. schools are still designed on the “factory model” of learning. At this moment in history when students, families, and educators are trying to recover from a public health crisis, an economic crisis, and a crisis of civil rights and democracy, schools designed based on the science of learning and development are needed more critically than ever. A new report from the Learning Policy Institute offers a powerful evidence-based blueprint of 10 features for redesigning high schools to create learning environments that are more humane, enriching, and conducive to meaningful learning than our current factory models of schooling. https://bit.ly/4aNnjVG

We’re also thrilled to see our Coalition for Community Schools website and Building a Community Schools Systems Guide highlighted as resources in the report (pages 117-118)!

Redesigning High Schools: 10 Features for Success A number of schools have been effective at rejecting the factory model and redesigning their systems to create safe environments with opportunities for exciting and rigorous academic work. Their successes have ideas in common, offering 10 important lessons for other schools.
